PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (Phd) position in micro-optics, with focus on coronagraphs for exoplanet research

The project aims to design and manufacture the next generation of coronagraphs for space telescopes and large ground-based telescopes. A coronagraph is an instrument in a telescope that blocks a strong light source to make nearby weak light sources visible. For direct observations of Earth-like exoplanets, one must overcome an extremely high contrast in brightness within a very small viewing angle. The difference in brightness between star and planet can be on the order of 1010 and the angle between planet and star a few tenths of an arcsecond. To enable this, the PhD student, with the support of their supervisors and in collaboration with international colleagues in astronomy and instrument design, will design and manufacture micro-optical components with the aim of extinguishing the starlight through destructive interference.

The doctoral project is part of the Swedish Space Research School (SSRS), which aims to reinforce Sweden’s long‑term provision of expertise, to offer a coordinated and high‑quality doctoral education, and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across the Swedish space sector. Several SSRS courses, workshops and conferences will be included in the doctoral studies. SSRS is a national graduate school in space science and space technology, jointly administered by a consortium of Swedish universities and research institutes, and funded by the Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA). The director of SSRS is Christer Fuglesang.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in AI and machine learning for cancer research

The fundamental problem we want to solve is to understand how cells in a brain tumour choose to switch identity — and how that knowledge can be used to actively steer them towards more treatment-sensitive states. We call this concept state steering. Unlike conventional cancer therapy, which aims to kill tumour cells, state steering aims to reprogram them.

You will work with two main types of data collected within the strategic research centre CNS×3: large-scale intervention experiments, in which we systematically map how genetic and pharmacological perturbations affect tumour cell plasticity, and imaging-based tracking data, in which individual tumour cells are followed in real time as they migrate through brain tissue. The goal is to build AI models that integrate these data sources and predict how a given treatment affects tumour behaviour and outcome.

You will join an exciting computational team with a shared ambition: to integrate both data types within a unified mathematical framework — the theory of linear operators. Existing tools such as hidden Markov models (HMM), used to analyse individual cell movements in imaging data, are special cases of this broader framework. The new contribution, rewire-seq, is a more general and scalable version that combines large-scale intervention screens with imaging-based cell tracking to give an integrated picture of tumour dynamics. A key component of the project is cyclic experimentation: model predictions directly guide the choice of the next experiment, and results feed back into the model — a workflow that makes the research progressively more precise. You will work closely with experimental colleagues, jointly translating biological questions into computational solutions with clinical relevance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning with a focus on mathematical foundations of uncertainty quantification in deep learning

Large language models (LLMs) enable the extraction of clinical information from unstructured medical text. However, current LLM-based approaches often lack principled uncertainty quantification, limiting their reliability in healthcare applications. This project aims to develop mathematically grounded methods based on probability theory, statistical inference, and probabilistic modelling for uncertainty quantification in deep learning, particularly large language models. The focus will be on quantifying and evaluating uncertainty in predictions derived from medical reports, and on integrating these uncertainties into downstream probabilistic time-to-event models. Applications will focus on prostate cancer, using large-scale clinical registry data and unstructured medical text.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (Phd) position in Tribology with focus on Sustainable transformer oils for electrical contacts

Transformers and tap-changers are facing a technological transition where new, alternative transformer oils – such as ester based and bio-based oils – are replacing the traditional mineral oils. These new oils have many advantages, but have also shown to give unexpected and severe wear problems in sliding electrical contacts. Despite previous studies the mechanisms behind this wear are still uncertain.

This doctoral project aims to build understanding on how temperature, oil chemistry, mechanical contact, and electrical field, work in conjunction to give (or prevent) the wear of the sliding contacts in transformers. The project combines experimental tribology, advanced surface chemistry, electrical testing, and data driven analysis.

The project will be performed in close collaboration with Hitachi Energy, and parts of the work can be performed on-site in Ludvika to take advantage of the expertise and equipment in place. Hitachi Energy offers a unique research environment with access to high voltage laboratories, where sliding contacts can be studied under controlled current and voltage in transformer oil – something very few academic environments in the world can offer.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in evolutionary genomics

Sex chromosomes are fundamentally important in biology, but our understanding of their evolution is still limited. Genetic conflict situations such as sex ratio meiotic drive have long been implicated in the fast evolution of sex chromosomes and may thereby contribute divergence and speciation. This project investigates a plant genus, willows (Salix), with separate sexes, where female sex ratio bias is common and a high turnover of sex chromosomes has been described. The project has three main objectives: (1) Use simulation models to make inferences on the role of sex ratio selection on sex chromosome evolution in a different meiotic drive scenarios, (2) Experimentally test hypotheses on candidate mechanisms leading to female sex ratio bias (e.g., meiotic drive with restorers) using existing and new crosses. (3) Establish the genetic underpinnings of sex ratio bias, including previously detected structural variation on sex chromosomes, and analyze the evolutionary history of these regions within and across species. Overall, this project will provide novel insights on long-standing questions on sex chromosome evolution and on evolutionary processes at large.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
