PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Environmental Science with focus on Marine Observation System Resilience
The PhD project will investigate how marine observation systems can become more resilient, scalable, and adaptive under accelerating environmental and climate change. The research will explore how environmental variables and emerging observation technologies can be combined to improve the long-term reliability, responsiveness, and usability of marine ecosystem monitoring across spatial and temporal scales.
The project will include work with remote sensing, autonomous sensors, environmental monitoring technologies, data integration, and system-level analyses of monitoring performance under changing environmental conditions. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding how observation systems respond to environmental stress, uncertainty, and increasing data complexity, as well as how monitoring approaches can be designed to remain effective across different marine contexts and scales. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation approaches for marine environmental assessment and sustainability, working at the interface of environmental systems science, marine technology, and data-driven research within an international and collaborative research environment.
The PhD candidate will join the ‘Measuring What Matters’ consortium – a new 30M SEK Formas-funded research programme that aims to develop and operationalise a coordinated, adaptive and science-based foundation for marine and coastal observations. Led by Uppsala University – Campus Gotland, additional consortium partners include the University of Gothenburg and the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) Gotland.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Energy Technology with focus on Human–Building Interaction
The project aims to generate new knowledge on how households interact with energy systems in a sustainable built environment. Particular emphasis is placed on different human behaviors, opportunities for participation, and issues related to social sustainability. By combining perspectives from building technology, environmental psychology, and human–building interaction, the project will contribute to a deeper understanding of how sustainable energy transitions can be designed in ways that are technically effective, socially robust, and relevant to real-life residential contexts.
The project employs a combination of methods, including controlled experiments in the IHBI laboratory, studies in immersive and intelligent built environments, and analysis of behavioral and physiological data. The work also includes the development of personas, the use of LLM‑enhanced decision narratives, and agent-based social modeling.
The knowledge generated in the project will form the basis for new methods and tools to better analyze household energy behaviors. Particular focus is placed on identifying barriers and variations between different user groups, as well as developing evidence-based strategies for more inclusive and sustainable energy solutions in the built environment.
As a doctoral student in the project, you will be involved in experimental research combining immersive virtual environments, climate chamber testing, and advanced sensing technologies. The aim is to develop new knowledge on human–building interaction, indoor environmental experiences, adaptive behaviour, and inclusive energy‑efficient solutions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, with a specialization in inorganic chemistry
Throughout the nuclear fuel cycle, from fuel reprocessing to final disposal, interfaces between water and metal oxides arise at which ionizing radiation induces radiolysis of the water. The species formed, free radicals and other reactive molecules, can affect corrosion rates, the release of radionuclides, and the material properties of both reactor materials and the barrier materials used in a deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. In a collaborative project with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), we are therefore recruiting a PhD student to investigate, within a basic-research project, these radiation-induced processes at various oxide–water interfaces.
The PhD student will, among other things, combine time-resolved and multimodal X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES, EXAFS, and others) at synchrotron facilities such as MAXIV with theoretical molecular modeling of the corresponding systems. The work will be carried out in the Molecular Geochemistry research group (moleculargeo.chem.umu.se) at the Department of Chemistry, Umeå University (www.umu.se/chemistry), in collaboration with researchers and PhD students at KTH.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Business Administration, focus on accounting and auditing
You will have the Department of Business Administration at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics as your primary workplace and will be working on a research project (Assurance in Transition: The CSRD Competence Challenge) led by Associate Professor Alice Annelin. Within the scope of the project, you will define your own research question. The project takes an exploratory approach, allowing for a range of suitable methods for data collection and analysis. The doctoral project is initially funded by the Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Foundation and the Tore Browaldh Foundation (Handelsbanken Research Foundations).
As a Ph.D. student, you take doctoral courses and conduct independent research within accounting and auditing. The course part of the doctoral education amounts to 90 ECTS, while the research (thesis) amounts to 150 ECTS. You are also expected to contribute to the research environment through other activities, such as participation in seminars, conferences, and workshops. The doctoral education equals four years of full-time studies (240 ECTS). Normally, doctoral students participate in undergraduate teaching and/or other departmental duties up to 20% of their working time from the second year onwards. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Plant Science with focus on functional genomics of conifers
Conifer genomes are exceptionally large and rich in transposable elements, yet the functional consequences of TE insertions on gene regulation remain poorly understood. The Con-TEki project aims to understand how TE-derived regulatory elements contribute to gene expression divergence and adaptive responses in conifers.
This doctoral project focuses on the development and implementation of approaches for functional validation of regulatory elements in conifer systems. The work will bridge large-scale regulatory genomics with experimental molecular biology to directly test hypotheses generated from genome-wide datasets.
The project will involve the integration of genomic data (e.g. chromatin accessibility, gene expression and methylation data) with experimental approaches to validate candidate regulatory elements and gene regulatory mechanisms. Emphasis will be placed on establishing robust and reproducible workflows for functional assays in spruce and pine.
Within this framework, the position provides strong opportunities to develop expertise at the interface between experimental molecular biology and bioinformatics. The project will make use of transformation and functional validation platforms available at UPSC, enabling direct testing of candidate regulatory elements in conifer systems. This project is particularly suited to candidates with a strong interest in experimental method development and optimisation. Experience with reporter assays, transient expression systems or genome editing approaches is particularly relevant.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, with a specialization in Planetary Biogeochemistry and Spectroscopy
Could liquid water and even the chemical fingerprints of past or present life still be hiding in the icy Mars today? This doctoral project sets out to answer that question in the laboratory.
Salts such as chlorides and perchlorates keep brines and thin water films liquid-like far below 0 °C across the Martian surface, yet we still know little about how the regolith captures water and whether fragile organics survive. Using cutting-edge cryogenic vibrational spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, the doctoral student will build a unique spectral and imaging database of Mars analogue soils and link it to spacecraft mission data (e.g., SuperCam, SHERLOC, CheMin, REMS) to trace water, cryosalts and organics on present-day Mars.
During this doctoral project, the student will get an opportunity to work in experiments and trials, both at our laboratory and local infrastructures in Umeå as well as at our collaborators’ laboratories at the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center (CA) and NASA Johnson Space Center (TX). We offer a unique opportunity to learn high-end techniques, especially for cryogenic studies, and to build a scientific network in astrobiology and planetary science fields. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Plant Science
We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join the Plant Cell Wall Dynamics Lab, led by Associate Professor Laura Bacete. The successful candidate will investigate how physical and chemical changes in the plant cell wall are sensed and transduced into growth, differentiation, and stress responses. To this end, the student will combine Brillouin microscopy, live-cell biosensors, optogenetic tools, and targeted genetic approaches in Arabidopsis thaliana to characterise mechanochemical signatures and map these to early cell wall integrity (CWI) outputs.
The doctoral project is embedded in a broader, collaborative research environment. The student will work closely with experts in optical microscopy, plant defence, and synthetic biology, and will benefit from the extensive infrastructure and scientific community at Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). Participation in national and international collaborations is expected and actively supported.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in mathematics with a focus on combinatorics, group theory and geometry
The PhD student will carry out theoretical research at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and geometry.
We will explore abstract notions of rigidity and motion in non-classical geometries using combinatorial, algebraic, and group-theoretic methods, inspired by the mathematical theory of articulated systems and constraint geometry. Possible tools include combinatorics, algebraic methods, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory, depending on the interests and background of the successful candidate. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, with a specialization in structural and molecular virology
The doctoral student will investigate replication and assembly of mosquito-transmitted RNA-viruses. This will involve the study of both virion architecture and viral factories within infected cells. The project will combine virology and structural biology approaches and involves training in cellular cryogenic electron tomography (cryo-ET) data collection and processing.
We offer a collaborative environment and work closely together with expert virology groups, both locally and internationally. The Department of Chemistry is home to the Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) providing local training and access to state-of-the-art cryogenic electron microscopy facilities, including cryo-focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Our team is well-funded and has extensive resources for accessing cryo-EM, computational, and biosafety-lab infrastructure.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Spatial Statistics
Spatial data arise in several forms, including areal data, geostatistical measurements of continuous fields, and point pattern data. In point pattern data, the primary information consists of the locations of events observed within a spatial region and, in many applications, over time. Examples include the positions of trees in a forest, disease cases in epidemiology, crime incidents in cities, traffic events on transportation networks, or animal observations in ecological studies. These data are commonly analysed using spatial or spatio-temporal point processes, which describe how events occur and interact. In many applications, each event also carries additional information, such as a type, size, or environmental measurement, leading to marked point patterns in which the event locations, times, and associated attributes are of interest.
The primary objective of this PhD project is to develop adaptive statistical models for marked spatial and spatio-temporal point processes. Many real-world systems exhibit substantial spatial heterogeneity and temporal variation and cannot be adequately described by models that assume a uniform structure. The project aims to develop flexible models that allow key characteristics of the process, such as event occurrence patterns, mark behaviour, and interactions between events, to vary locally in space and evolve over time. The research will include model development, statistical inference and diagnostic methods, and applications to real datasets where non-stationarity and evolving dynamics play an important role.
