Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate
Dr. Craig Altier is seeking outstanding junior scientists to join the Altier Lab in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, Cornell University, as Post-doctoral Associates, working on projects funded by the NIH and the USDA. Research in our laboratory focuses on the means by which the bacterial pathogen Salmonella responds to its environment to express traits necessary for survival and virulence. A major research focus describes the cues within an animal host that affect virulence gene expression. The funded work examines how changes in the environment of the intestine affect the virulence of Salmonella, and how these conditions might be manipulated to reduce disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate
A Postdoctoral Associate position is open in the VanderVen lab to study TB host pathogen biology for drug discovery.
Our group focuses on chemical and genetic approaches to probe M. tuberculosis pathogenesis and the interactions with immune cells. In particular, we are interested in understanding how M. tuberculosis persists and replicates in macrophages in order to define new weaknesses and drugs that enhance current Tuberculosis treatments. By integrating chemical and genetic approaches, our work sheds light on new aspects of basic biology and we translate these findings into early stage drug candidates. Our research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Associate
A postdoctoral position is available to investigate microbes associated with the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), an invasive beetle from Asia. This NSF funded project will focus on the taxonomic, functional, and genetic biodiversity of microbes associated with emerald ash borer and to understand how they may contribute to the invasive biology of this insect pest. The postdoc will conduct fieldwork in NY, Minnesota, and Georgia to collect emerald ash borer, ash, and gallery samples and will use both metagenomic and transcriptomic approaches to characterize the microbiomes associated with these environments. They will also investigate functions of microbes in enabling insect infection of ash trees. Functional traits of microbes that may be investigated in laboratory and greenhouse bioassays include degradation of lignocellulose, detoxification of ash plant defense compounds, vectoring plant pathogenic fungi to enhance disease, or entomopathogenic fungi with the potential for biocontrol.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate- Natural Resources
The Therkildsen Lab (conservation genomics) and McIntyre Lab (global fisheries) at Cornell University, in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Oceans Program and WorldFish, are seeking a postdoc for a new project tracing the species and sources of fishes used to feed the global expansion of aquaculture. The postdoc position will offer leadership opportunities in two main areas. First, building on our initial metabarcoding work, we will explore the potential for shotgun sequencing approaches to determine the relative abundance of each species used in an aquaculture feed. Results from feeds collected worldwide will elucidate the global geography of connections between the harvest of wild fish and the production of farmed fish. Second, our team will engage with industry and NGOs to pave the way for integrating metagenomic tools into next-generation standards for aquaculture sustainability certification.

About Cornell University, New York, United States – Official Website
Cornell University is a private, statutory, Ivy League and land-grant research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s founding principle, a popular 1868 quotation from founder Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”
The university is broadly organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus, with each college and division defining its specific admission standards and academic programs in near autonomy. The university also administers two satellite medical campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.
Cornell is one of the few private land grant universities in the United States. Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its agricultural and human ecology colleges as well as its industrial labor relations school. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the veterinary college is state-supported. As a land grant college, Cornell operates a cooperative extension outreach program in every county of New York and receives annual funding from the State of New York for certain educational missions. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus comprises 745 acres, but is much larger when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the numerous university-owned lands in New York City are considered.
