Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN THE ANALYSIS OF SPECIES COMMUNITY CHANGE
We are now seeking a post doc to analyze how recent environmental change is reflected in the emergence of novel species communities. This work focuses on characterizing not only rates of change at the community level, but at the rate with which new types of communities are being formed. As environmental conditions are pushed beyond their historical range of variation, species are assembling in combinations never seen before. While such novelty has continuously emerged at different rates throughout the history of our planet, its current rate of emergence may be accelerating due to human activities, may differ among organism groups, and may depend on regional and taxon-specific baseline conditions – with unknown consequences for ecosystem functioning. Thus, the successful candidate will use Finnish time series on different organism groups to establish the rates with which ecological novelty is emerging, to compare rates among organisms, and to probe for drivers of novelty in both aquatic and terrestrial communities. Thus, the postdoctoral researcher will work at the interface of environmental monitoring, community ecology and applied statistics.
Deadline : 16.01.2022
(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
The postdoctoral researcher will join Environmental Soil Science unit (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/environmental-soil-science) led by Professor Mari Pihlatie at the University of Helsinki, and Climate Solutions unit led by Juha Nousiainen at Valio Ltd. The MiNiMi project is a collaborative project between the University of Helsinki and Valio Ltd., and it facilitates science-business dialogue between partners and collaborators both in industry (Yara Finland, SoilScout, Vaisala) and academia (Finnish Meteorological Institute, Natural Re-sources Institute Finland). The project utilizes state-of-the-art measurement methods to quantify greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, N2O) emissions and the total climate impact of grasslands, and through the collaboration it provides science-based solutions to mitigate N2O emissions.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website
The University of Helsinki is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.
As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.
The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
