(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral Researcher

A primary task of the post-doctoral researcher(s) will be to lead model development and enhancement efforts within the UMD NCSGCGIS team. Team members previously developed a ridership model in 2015 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2018.06.011). However, ridership trends have since evolved and the transit system has expanded. At the same time, new built environment and ridership-related variables have become available as well as new machine learning-based approaches for modeling space-time trends. As a result, roles of the postdoctoral researcher(s) on this project will include: (1) collecting and managing a database of diverse variables; (2) creating new variables based on the transportation network, points-of-interest, and neighborhood characteristics; (3) updating the currently existing model; (4) enhancing the ridership model with new variables and the incorporation of spatial dependence structures; (5) employing the ridership model to understand the factors responsible for generating ridership across different types of stations and forecasting future scenarios; and (6) drafting progress reports. The post-doctoral researcher(s) will work closely with the other project members and partnering organizations on model integration, scenario development and analysis, and testing. The project will provide a unique opportunity to work in a truly multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational team composed of transportation and urban planning researchers, geospatial information scientists, local planners, and technologists.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Associate

A postdoctoral associate position is available for enthusiastic and driven scientists wishing to study the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying metal homeostasis and metabolic disease. The postdoc will carry out research into how organisms transport and distribute essential metal ions such as copper and iron and properly regulate gene expression for normal growth and development. Our research investigations use a combination of genetics, molecular and biochemical approaches to study metal homeostasis in mammalian cells, C. elegans and mice as model systems. We are particularly interested in maintaining systemic metabolism via inter-organ communication mediated by tissue-specific metal trafficking machineries. Our approaches include genetically altered mice, metabolic phenotyping, biochemical analysis of glucose/lipid/metal metabolism, molecular and cell biology techniques, proteomics and transcriptomic analysis, etc.

About University of Maryland, United States – Official Website

The University of Maryland, College Park (University of Maryland, UMD, or simply Maryland) is a public land-grant research university in College Park, Maryland. Founded in 1856, UMD is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. It is also the largest university in both the state and the Washington metropolitan area, with more than 41,000 students representing all fifty states and 123 countries, and a global alumni network of over 360,000. Its twelve schools and colleges together offer over 200 degree-granting programs, including 92 undergraduate majors, 107 master’s programs, and 83 doctoral programs. UMD is a member of the Association of American Universities and competes in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Big Ten Conference.

The University of Maryland’s proximity to the nation’s capital has resulted in many research partnerships with the federal government; faculty receive research funding and institutional support from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” and is labeled a “Public Ivy”, denoting a quality of education comparable to the private Ivy League. UMD is ranked among the top 100 universities both nationally and globally by several indices.

In 2016, the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore formalized their strategic partnership after their collaboration successfully created more innovative medical, scientific, and educational programs, as well as greater research grants and joint faculty appointments than either campus has been able to accomplish on its own. According to the National Science Foundation, the university spent a combined $1.1 billion on research and development in 2019, ranking it 14th overall in the nation and 8th among all public institutions. As of 2021, the operating budget of the University of Maryland is approximately $2.2 billion.
