Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two postdoc positions in contemporary art studies
The project Artistic Practice under Contemporary Conditions is a theoretical and analytical investigation of the relationship between artistic practice and the socio-political context in which it takes place. It is guided by the hypotheses that this relationship has undergone substantial changes during an art historical shift from modern art to contemporary art, and that the discipline of art history needs to revise traditional notions of its historicity, categories of work and artistic autonomy in order to catch up with the phenomenon of contemporary art, which often escapes these notions. Rather than defining what contemporary art is, the purpose is to explore how contemporary artistic practices create meaning in relation to the non-artistic societal reality in and on which they operate. The focus is on exploring and describing how the very diverse practices and works we collect under the name of “contemporary art” function as art, and on what qualifies them as artistic. The working language of the project is English. Read an extended description of the project here.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in the ‘Collective Blindness’ research project
The project is funded by Aarhus University Research Foundation and will examine how social groups can bias individuals to ignore factual information, such as in climate change denial and anti-vaxxing. This tendency, called motivated blindness, has been studied in individuals, but not in groups, although climate change denial and anti-vaxxing cases suggest a need for such research. In this project, we wish to understand how entire groups can become blind to important information i.e., collective blindness. The nature of the question spans micro and macro levels of social science and to fully explore it, we aim to establish a research topic on collective blindness and develop the first computational model of collective blindness through methods that integrate cognitive science and complex systems research. Understanding collective blindness through computational models is an important step towards predicting and potentially mitigating it to improve individual and public welfare. The project is led by PI Jacob L Orquin and co-PI Sonja Perkovic from the Department of Management at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University. The project is in collaboration with Henrik Olsson and Mirta Galesic from the Santa Fe Institute, USA.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in environmental and social psychology
We aim at making a significant contribution to our understanding of which factors foster sustainable behavior. Acting sustainably can be understood as a social dilemma, entailing a conflict between individual and collective interests. We will investigate sustainable behavior from a social dilemma perspective. A special focus lies on the fact that actors—be that individuals, or larger entities like companies or states—often have very different (financial) opportunities that enable them to consume resources but also to contribute to environmental protection to a different degree. To examine this important factor, we will conduct laboratory experiments using economic games (i.e., public goods games, common resource games), but also implement experience sampling to assess resource consumption in everyday life. We furthermore aim to transfer our knowledge to applied settings. Hereby, the project aims to uncover which factors influence (un)sustainable behavior and to explore ways to foster more sustainable behavior.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
In the last 15 years, the wind turbine has only evolve one way, namely, bigger and bigger. Rotor diameter has grown with approximately 3.8m/year, and as the rotor gets bigger, the rest of the turbine’s components grow similarly. This evolution means that the value chain of wind turbine manufacturing is more frequently challenged by increasing size, weight and complexity. Correspondingly, transport of larger and heavier items is becoming a very big issue. Different places in the world there are restrictions on what times of the day where it is allowed to transport the components, there is restrictions on which roads we must use and what kind of transport, whether it is by truck, train etc. The cost of such transports becomes very expensive, and in a market where price per MW, is decreasing, we get increasingly challenged to find a way to reduce the cost in our value chain. One of the options to cope with these challenges is to move the manufacturing of the modules closer to installation site, and in a controlled environment to assemble such modules locally.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in social transmission modelling at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies/Interacting Minds Centre, Aarhus University
The successful candidate would be associated with the project PLAY | OBJECT | PLAY (P|O|P), funded by the Aarhus University Research Foundation’s NOVA scheme. P|O|P aims to develop an integrative child-centred model of material culture change. Both narrative and quantitative archaeological models aimed at explaining technological change have primarily focused on the role of adults as innovators and transmitters of tool manufacturing skill. Drawing on existing cross-cultural datasets (eHRAF), the project will explore differences in object play behaviour and play objects across individual life-history and in different socio-ecological constellations (foragers, horticulturalists, agriculturalists), and on this basis develop an agent-based model for how societal factors may predict children’s acquisition and innovation of tools. These predictions will then be tested against the existing archaeological data from published and unpublished records to infer children’s material culture contributions in the deep past. Our particular aim is to explore cross-culturally to what degree play-based social learning may have contributed to adaptive/non-adaptive responses during times of environmental stress.
