Postdoctoral positions to study the molecular physiologies of InsP3R and MCU Ca2+ ion channels and CALHM ion channels are available in the laboratory of Kevin Foskett at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Our focus is on the molecular physiologies of three ion channel families, and their roles in physiology, including bioenergetics, cancer, neurodegeneration and sensory perception. Our research on the IP3R Ca2+ release channel and the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter seeks to understand the molecular determinants and physiological functions of endoplasmic reticulum-to-mitochondria Ca2+ transfer. Our research on CALHM ion channels centers on their roles in taste perception and the elucidation of the functional roles of different CALHM family members. Projects are available to investigate many aspects of channel biophysics, Ca2+ signaling, structural biology, and animal models.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researchers
Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our lab is interested in cancer, stemness, and neurodegeneration. The current projects focus on two areas:
(1) The tumor suppressor p53, metabolism, and autophagy. We are interested in the regulation and functions of the preeminent tumor suppressor p53. Our results have revealed an important role for p53 in modulating metabolic pathways that are critical for biosynthesis and redox balance. We are investigating the function of p53 as both a sentinel and a regulator for metabolic activities. Furthermore, we are identifying and characterizing metabolic alterations that drive tumor initiation and progression. A recent extension of this research area is to define the role of metabolism and autophagy in stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and cancer stem cells.
(2) Protein quality control, aging, and neurodegeneration. Our lab recently identified two protein quality control (PQC) systems, which consist of tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins and poly-Asp/Glu (polyD/E) proteins, respectively. Unlike canonical PQC systems, these new systems are independent of ATP. They are multifunctional and highly effective in suppressing protein misfolding and aggregation. We are investigating their mechanisms of action; their roles in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and polyglutamine diseases; and their utility in treating these diseases.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Tumor & Radiation Oncology
The Koumenis and Minn labs in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA seek qualified and self-motivated candidates for a joint Postdoctoral Fellow position available immediately to study the molecular mechanisms underlying an exciting new radiation modality (“FLASH radiotherapy”). Our groups are well funded by large NIH grant and Foundation grants and by industry sponsored agreements.
The two labs are part of a large Research Division comprised of 10 faculty and is well integrated within the Abramson Cancer Center. There are ample opportunities for training and career development, including mentoring on grant writing, career advice, networking and attendance and presentations national and international scientific meetings and symposia. Former graduate students and postdoctoral fellows trained in our labs currently hold faculty positions in academia and scientist positions in industry and in government agencies.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Pharmacoepidemiology
The postdoctoral researcher will primarily work on the following pharmacoepidemiology-focused studies, each led by a faculty member in the Division of Epidemiology.
Dr. Sean Hennessy, a clinical pharmacist and pharmacoepidemiologist, is PI of a National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded study entitled “Drug-Drug Interactions Involving Methadone and Buprenorphine”. This study will: i) perform high-throughput physiologically-based pharmacokinetic screening to predict the degree to which two-drug and three-drug combinations that include methadone or buprenorphine increase biological exposure to those agents; ii) perform high-throughput pharmacoepidemiologic screening of two-drug and three-drug combinations that include methadone or buprenorphine with regard to rate of emergency department presentation or hospitalization for opioid overdose and poisoning, opioid adverse effects, and cardiac arrest; iii) convene an independent multidisciplinary Expert Panel to review screening results and prioritize potential drug interaction pairs and triads for further investigation; and iv) conduct a series of rigorous pharmacoepidemiologic studies to inform causal inferences and thereby generate clinically-actionable evidence on prioritized methadone and buprenorphine drug-drug interactions. This rigorous, innovative study will produce actionable results that will guide the selection of drug therapy in the growing population of persons using methadone or buprenorphine who have comorbidities necessitating treatment. The postdoctoral researcher should anticipate leading aspects of study components ii–iv.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc –CRISPR screen in hematopoietic stem cells to study ribosome biogenesis /ubiquitin signaling
A postdoctoral fellow position is available at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to perform state-of-the-art CRISPR/Cas9 screens to identify novel therapeutic targets for treating hematopoietic stem cell diseases. Hematopoietic stem cells give rise to all circulating blood cells throughout life. Maintenance of stem cell self-renewal, proliferation and differentiation is regulated by complex signaling pathways. Aberrant regulation leads to bone marrow failure or leukemia. Dr. Tong’s laboratory studies various signaling pathways in hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow failure, and leukemia. Her laboratory recently identified a novel E3 ubiquitin ligase that plays a critical role in ribosome assembly and thereby controls hematopoietic stem cell regeneration. This postdoctoral fellow position will focus on studying the mechanisms by which ubiquitin-dependent signaling and ribosome biogenesis in regulating stem cells and investigating how failures in these processes impact hematopoietic stem cell function that leads to bone marrow failure and/or leukemia. Furthermore, this postdoctoral fellow will perform state-of-the-art CRISPR/Cas9 screens to identify novel therapeutic targets for treating hematopoietic stem cell diseases.
