(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Immuno-Onco-Virology

The use of OVs in cancer therapy is an emerging therapeutic approach that has demonstrated significant antitumor effects and safety in phases I-III clinical trials. OVs are tumor-selective, self-amplifying therapeutics that selectively kill cancer cells via direct oncolysis, shutdown of tumor vasculature and stimulate immune responses against tumor antigens. An essential aspect in the development of these agents is safety, thus clinically relevant viruses are genetically engineered to remove any pathogenic viral functions and be highly sensitive to interferon (IFN), the major antiviral host defence system. These alterations render the virus safe to be administered to patients, but unfortunately can affect viral replication and spread within tumour tissues. This constitutes a critical limitation to these agents. Because significant replication of oncolytic viruses in tumour tissues is necessary for highest efficacy, the identification of strategies that significantly potentiate viral replication of clinically relevant and safe viruses, specifically within malignant tissues, could substantially improve oncolysis and stimulate stronger anti-tumour immune responses. In the opened position, we will identify resistance factor to OV therapy in cancer cells using genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screens or compound library screen and genetically engineer novel OVs to unleash their oncolytic potential. These novel viruses will be tested as anticancer treatment agents in vitro in cancer cell lines, ex vivo in patient-derived cancer material and in vivo in murine and zebra fish models.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in prehistoric archaeology

The eSYMB project aims to establish a novel integrative framework for the investigation of early symbolic evolution, using records from archaeology in behavioural experimental investigations and computational modelling. Starting from the assumption that symbolic artefacts evolve adaptively over time to better fulfil their intended symbolic functions, the project investigates structural changes to symbolic artefacts and their cognitive implications to inform inferences about their past use. The project will thus establish transparent, data-driven methods and criteria to test concrete hypotheses about early human symbolic behaviour from archaeological sites across the world focussing on the later part of human evolution (~150,000 – 12,000 years ago), based on measures critical to symbolic cognition and behaviour.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in digital activism

The position will be part of the work package: Digital Activism. Whether corporate or state-controlled, the digitisation of the citizen often gives rise to opposition, critique and search for alternatives beyond a focus on maximising profits or immediate convenience. Digital activism is here understood as software and network-related practices (including digital art) that address mass digitisation itself, including power asymmetries, societal issues and social injustices in a broad sense (rather than the use of digital media as a means for activism or participation in social movements). Examples include when citizens choose non-commercial Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), encrypted search engines, or self-hosted servers and applications; when they develop new tools and services that draw attention to or circumvent mass digitisation; or simply when they choose to opt out. A distinctive feature of a sustainable democracy is its ability to accommodate such activism that questions the normalisation of digital technology and imagines better or more inclusive futures. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how digital activism understands and potentially contributes to the development of digital citizenship.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position in Chemoproteomics and Cellular Signaling

Biological aging is the largest risk factor for most chronical diseases. Biological aging and energy metabolism are strongly intertwined and recent evidence suggest that one of the main links are rooted in non-enzymatic modifications of key sensory proteins. Therefore, understanding how energy metabolism mechanistically impact on cellular signaling is fundamental to advance the understanding of biological aging. To address these questions we will use our in-house developed chemical probes to map the main sensory proteins using chemoproteomic techniques. Secondly, we will experimentally test the functional impact of main targets on relevant aging parameters in cell-based assays and potentially animal models. This will allow us to gain detailed insight into how energy metabolism regulate biological aging.

(19) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the field of tumour imaging

The overall goal of the project is to improve our knowledge in detecting the tumour shape on patient imaging such as CT, MRI, and PET, to make our treatments more accurate. To achieve this, we will look at patients that undergo tumour surgery, where we can correlate pathology data, such a histology and immunohistochemistry, with the patient imaging data. This is a challenging task, as pathology data is obtained after many tissue processing steps, and only on 2D microscopy slides. To overcome these challenges, we have developed a spectral microCT scanner to obtain 3D high-resolution scans of a tumour before it is processed for pathology evaluation. By correlating the pathology data with the microCT scans, we can develop tumour segmentation tools for the microCT scans, that will result in a high-resolution 3D representation of the tumour shape. This tumour shape can subsequently be registered to the pre-operative imaging data, providing a more solid gold standard tumour segmentation. In the final part of the project the more solid gold standard tumour segmentation will be used to improve deep-learning based tumour segmentation models for patient images. The spectral microCT scanner is based on a Medipix3 energy resolved photon counting detector.

(23) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the molecular mechanism of autophagy

Autophagy is a catabolic process highly conserved among eukaryotes, which is involved in the degradation of long-lived proteins, aberrant complexes and aggregates, dysfunctional and superfluous organelles, and intracellular pathogens. Structures targeted to destruction are sequestered by double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes and delivered to lysosomes for turnover. The resulting metabolites are reused by the cell as either an energy source or building blocks for the synthesis of new macromolecules. Autophagy is essential to maintain cellular and organismal homeostasis because involved in the adaptation to stresses, quality control, metabolism regulation, cell development and differentiation, stemness maintenance, type II program cell death, tumor suppression and immunity. As a result, the impairment or defect in autophagy leads to severe pathologies such as neurodegeneration, myopathies, chronic inflammations, and some malignancies. Crucially, it has also been shown that autophagy is an effective therapy to prevent or cure diseases, including specific types of tumors, muscular dystrophies, and neurodegenerative disorders. The elucidation of the mechanisms involved in activation and regulation of autophagy, but also the identification of the proteins required for recognition and elimination of the various autophagic cargoes, is therefore of primary relevance. Understanding the exact role of autophagy in the various physiological situations and pathological conditions is also crucial. All this knowledge combined is essential to be able to modulate autophagy to the benefit of human health, but also for biotechnological and agricultural applications.
