(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in the research project architecture and patents (m/f/d)
The SNSF-funded project Architecture and Patent. The Buildings of the ETH Domain examines the role of patents in architecture, both in the development of technical inventions and with regard to the protection of utility and design patents for design elements. The objects of research are the buildings of the ETH domain in Zurich and Lausanne, at the locations of the Paul Scherrer Institute and the EMPA from 1855 to the present day. Forming a continuous building stock characterized by a claim to innovation, they meet the requirements for the patent analyzes covering building activity from historicism to modernism and postmodernism to the present.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position on “Biophysical interactions in microbial communities”
In this project, you will work primarily on biophysical interactions driving or maintaining symbioses between bacteria and phytoplankton in the ocean. Phytoplankton as the main primary producers and bacteria as the main heterotrophic consumers represent two of the most abundant and biogeochemically important groups of microorganisms in the ocean. Their interactions are key to both ecosystem-level processes (e.g. demise of algal blooms) and global biogeochemical processes (e.g. the carbon cycle and ultimately climate regulation). There is increasing evidence that the association between these organisms can be beneficial for both partners, with phytoplankton providing carbon and bacteria providing limiting resources (e.g. vitamins), resulting in symbiosis. Yet, the nature, dynamics, stability and efficiency of these interactions remain largely unknown, chiefly because of the challenges in directly observing these processes at the single-cell level. In the Stocker lab, we have developed a suite of tools to directly assay microbial interactions through microfluidics and time-resolved imaging, which we are now leveraging to understand interactions in microbial communities, including symbiosis.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position on “Modeling the biophysics of microbial communities”
Microbiomes consist of diverse communities of microorganisms which, by engaging in complex and often evolving interactions, regulate the functioning of human bodies or natural ecosystems. Beyond metabolic interactions, microbial communities are characterized and often shaped by rich biophysical interactions. The distance between cells determines the strength of the exchange of metabolites and the probability of encounter between cells. The movement of cells governs the rate at which cells aggregate into clusters or communities. The rate of flow dictates how rapidly nutrients are replenished and a community is refreshed. The transport of dissolved substances, by diffusion and flow, governs the field of signals that cells sense and can use for navigation, for example to find conspecifics or sources of nutrients. The spatial configuration of the environments affects all of these processes, from flow to nutrient fields, and further shapes the attachment and motility characteristics of cells. Many of these processes are general across multiple microbiomes: from the human gut, to particles in the ocean, to the surface of leaves.
