(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate
An NSF-funded postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Adrienne Roeder’s group at Cornell University to research how Arabidopsis leaves grow to form flat laminar surfaces. Thin tissues, such as plant leaves, are typically flat, whereas the default state of a growing thin sheet is curved. The overarching goal of this project is to understand how leaves maintain their flat structure while they grow. Leaf flatness is a key agronomic trait because it affects the extent of light interception and carbon dioxide intake which are required for photosynthesis. The postdoc hired for this position will address this question of leaf flatness through live-imaging of growth, biophysical experiments, and genetic manipulation using Arabidopsis leaves. We will test the hypothesis that differences between neighboring cells in their growth (heterogeneity) allows the cells to sense variations in leaf curvature and correct to maintain flatness as the leaf expands. The relationship between cell-to-cell differences in growth, cell mechanics, and leaf flatness will be characterized using single and double mutants with curved, crinkly or wavy leaves. This is an interdisciplinary project in which we will collaborate with Arezki Boudaoud’s laboratory in France to develop models, computational data analysis pipelines and perform biophysical experiments. Please visit the Roeder laboratory website (http://roeder.wicmb.cornell.edu) for more information and a full list of publications.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate | Plant Biology Section | School of Integrative Plant Science, CALS
A Postdoctoral Associate Position is immediately available to join the Scanlon Lab (http://scanlonlab.plantbio.cornell.edu/) in the Plant Biology Section at Cornell University in the area of plant genomics and developmental biology. This position requires an experienced developmental biologist to work on a collaborative project that investigates the control of leaf angle in a maize plant. Leaf angle is a strategic component of plant architecture, and an important area of plant research that interconnects fundamental research on the mechanisms of plant development and agriculture production through improved crop canopy for increased productivity. Leaf angle is affected by physical and developmental properties of the ligule and auricle, a hinge that forms at the blade/sheath boundary of maize leaves. This position will utilize laser microdissection transcriptomic analyses to identify genes involved in ligule/auricle development and the control of leaf angle variation in maize.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate (Department of Computational Biology); Ithaca, New York
We are seeking two Postdoctoral Associates to work on the genetic epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) at Cornell University. The project aims to develop population-genetic models and phylodynamic statistical inference frameworks and apply the developed methods to whole-genome sequencing data with its associated metadata for studying evolutionary processes and disease transmissions of Mtb. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in Bayesian inference methods. However, there is flexibility regarding the theoretical approaches used, and the postdocs will have the freedom to devise a creative computational framework for the project.

About Cornell University, New York, United States – Official Website
Cornell University is a private, statutory, Ivy League and land-grant research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s founding principle, a popular 1868 quotation from founder Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”
The university is broadly organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus, with each college and division defining its specific admission standards and academic programs in near autonomy. The university also administers two satellite medical campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.
Cornell is one of the few private land grant universities in the United States. Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its agricultural and human ecology colleges as well as its industrial labor relations school. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the veterinary college is state-supported. As a land grant college, Cornell operates a cooperative extension outreach program in every county of New York and receives annual funding from the State of New York for certain educational missions. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus comprises 745 acres, but is much larger when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the numerous university-owned lands in New York City are considered.
