(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Bacterial Super-resolution Microscopy

Applicants are invited for a post-doctoral RA position that will examine the Type VI secretion system (T6SS) found in many Gram-negative bacteria. We recently discovered that the T6SS can also be used as a potent weapon against fungal competitors and identified the first fungal-specific T6SS effector proteins, which cause fungal cell death. This system is likely to be widespread and represent a key determinant of competitive inter-microbial interactions in diverse polymicrobial communities, including those relevant to health and disease. In this project, we have assembled an expert, multi-disciplinary team to investigate the nature, role and molecular basis of T6SS-mediated anti-fungal activity.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate

The stratigraphic archives of the marginal plateaus and adjacent deepwater basins of the equatorial Atlantic preserve a unique record of the evolution of the Equatorial Atlantic Gateway (EAG), as well as low latitude palaeo climate and palaeoceanographic conditions over the last ~120 million years. This project seeks to provide a regional seismic stratigraphic framework for the north-eastern end of the EAG, on the west African continental margin, from the St. Paul Fracture Zone offshore Liberia to the Guinea Plateau, as the basis for a future full IODP proposal in the region. This will provide the basis for a sister proposal for the planned IODP Expedition 388 on the Pernambuco Plateau, Brazil (Co-I TDJ lead proponent 864 & co-chief Exp. 388), of which all co-investigators for this project are members of the ship- or shore-based science team. The seismic interpretation, and then recovery of sedimentary archives, would provide a more complete overview of the onset, evolution and palaeo environments of this gateway through time by constraining the behaviour of the northward end of the EAG to compliment the Exp. 388 sites on the South Atlantic side. Further, drilling in the proposed study area will constrain a globally important carbon sink region in the Central Atlantic. The study area also goes beyond Expedition 388 targets, in the potential accessibility of Early Cretaceous sediments to riser less drilling (~1 km burial depth), including the largest of the Cretaceous Ocean Anoxic Events. The geophysical and stratigraphic studies proposed here will allow us to target a series of depth transects across the northern EAG, to better understand biogeochemical partitioning with depth, and through time, providing the most comprehensive overview possible of these emerging basins and ocean gateway. Based on our studies of regional geophysical surveys, we have also identified an exceptionally preserved marine impact crater – the Nadir Crater – closely associated with the Cretaceous – Paleogene boundary. Targeting this crater is the aim of IODP proposal 1004-APL, focused on dating and testing the impact hypothesis. The work proposed here will provide additional site survey data for 1004-APL and allow us to plan additional drill sites outside of the Nadir Crater to understand the regional consequences of this impact event as part of a full 60-day IODP expedition beyond 2024.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate

This project is an international collaboration between several industrial and academic partners to develop a new understanding of fatigue induced by alternating stresses due to vibrations. The cycling of stresses in pipework will ultimately initiate microscopic cracks, which can propagate and eventually lead to through-the-thickness cracks and subsequently the loss of containment which can be particularly dangerous especially in the case of gasses. In this project, we aim to develop new pipework vibration acceptance criteria using experimental and numerical strategies. The experimental work will be carried out by the project partners while the numerical modelling will take place at Heriot-Watt University. The numerical models will complement and guide the experimental work. The modelling will involve using the finite element method and the development of Bayesian machine learning models to predict failure. The machine learning models will also be used to analyse the relation between the geometry, the flow inside the pipes and the vibration.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Extreme Ultrafast Optics

This position is to work on the XSOL project, funded by the European Research Council under a Consolidator Grant. You will join a team that will be exploring extreme strong-field physics at the fundamental limits of spatio-temporal confinement by scaling soliton-driven light sources in hollow capillary fibres by two orders of magnitude in power compared to the state of the art (see e.g. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41566-019-0416-4). We aim to create optical attosecond pulses (sub-cycle electric field transients in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum) with multi-terawatt peak power and excellent pulse contrast, with homogeneous linear polarisation, circular polarisation, or as radial vector beams. We also aim to create tuneable few-fs vacuum ultraviolet pulses with peak power exceeding 300 gigawatt. The majority of this project will be focused on applying these extreme light sources to drive strong-field physics in new regimes: high-harmonic generation driven in the VUV and relativistic nonlinear optics with sub-cycle pulse durations.

About Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Official Website

Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first mechanics’ institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.

Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge.

Heriot-Watt was established as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821. Having been inspired by Anderson’s College in Glasgow, Horner established the School to provide practical knowledge of science and technology to Edinburgh’s working men. The institution was initially of modest size, giving lectures two nights a week in rented rooms and boasting a small library of around 500 technical works. It was also oversubscribed, with admissions soon closing despite the cost of 15 shillings for a year’s access to lectures and the library.

The School was managed by a board of eighteen directors and primarily funded by sponsors from the middle and upper classes including Robert Stevenson and Walter Scott. It first became associated with the inventor and engineer James Watt in 1824, as a means of raising funds to secure permanent accommodation. Justifying the association, School Director Lord Cockburn said:
