(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in retinal neuroinflammation

The Beltran lab within the Division of Experimental Retinal Therapies, School of Veterinary Medicine, at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking exceptional candidates for a Postdoctoral fellowship in the field of neuroinflammation. Gene therapies for many different retinopathies have taken center stage in recent years with one FDA approved gene therapy in the market and over 30 other retinal gene therapies in clinical trials. Concern has also grown for gene therapy associated inflammation and its impact on long-term patient outcomes. This research project will focus on an in-depth understanding of AAV-mediated inflammation pathways and immune responses in large animal models and development of targeted mitigation strategies to reduce the possibility of persistent chronic inflammation post retinal gene therapy administration. Using transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, the goal will be to differentiate the pathways and molecules involved in disease-associated chronic retinal inflammation observed in most retinopathies, and those emerging post-gene therapy.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Position to study principles of synaptic networks of visual cortical circuits

Our lab seeks postdocs or research scientists to help us uncover new insights and broaden our understanding of cortical circuits. We use in vivo multiphoton microscopy to resolve individual synapses and perform single-cell optogenetics, whole-cell patch-clamp and extracellular electrophysiology, two-photon FLIM, CRISPR-Cas9 genetic manipulations, stereotaxic surgical microinjections of virus and DNA. Using these techniques we study cortical computations, the early visual system, developmental mechanisms, and synaptic plasticity in the ferret model system.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: T32 Postdoctoral Trainee – Translational Neuroimaging in ADRD

Training Program Summary: Neuroimaging has become a leading strategy used for translational research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), as well as a prominent biomarker strategy for defining preclinical stages of ADRD, for clinical differential diagnosis of ADRD, and for evaluating for target engagement and therapeutic responses in clinical trials. Modern neuroimaging is an inherently interdisciplinary field combining expertise in neuroscience, biostatistics, and bioengineering. Additional expertise in topics such as genomics and basic science disease mechanisms are also required to translate neuroimaging in ADRD research. This proposed cross-disciplinary training program will provide two years of support for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees from both biological and quantitative science backgrounds with the training required to develop a research career focusing on neuroimaging in ADRD. A core course curriculum will cover neuroimaging methods and additionally include specialized training in the Responsible Conduct of Research, Experimental Rigor, and Transparency and its application to neuroimaging. This program has 3 research specializations:

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral

he Bhoj Laboratory, a member of Penn’s Center of Cellular Immunotherapies (CCI), is looking for postdoctoral candidates interested in translational research focused on development of novel T cell immunotherapies. The over goal of the lab is to develop of CAR T cells and other platforms of engineered T cell-based immunotherapies for the treatment of diseases or conditions that are driven by pathogenic immune responses. The overarching premise is centered on the notion that T cell therapies offer several advantages in regard to target cell elimination and immunomodulation where traditional pharmacologic therapies fall short. Existing projects are focused on targeting B cells, plasma cells and T cells that drive autoimmune responses as well as allo-immune responses (e.g. anti-drug antibodies and organ/tissue allograft rejection. Several projects synergistically combine engineered T cell platforms with other biologicals or targeted small molecules for enhanced immune-modulation. Through highly collaborative efforts with academic and industry partners, projects span studies in rodent and NHP models as well as in humans in the form of active clinical trials and correlative studies using patient samples. Competitive candidates will have a strong background in immunology and, ideally, bioinformatics expertise. Penn and CCI offer a rich immunology and immunotherapy environment, with ample access to broad scientific and technique expertise as well as informal and formal mentorship to foster career development.

About The University of Pennsylvania, United States – Official Website

The University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university claims a founding date of 1740 and is one of the nine colonial colleges chartered prior to the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin, Penn’s founder and first president, advocated an educational program that trained leaders in commerce, government, and public service, similar to a modern liberal arts curriculum with a practical perspective.

Penn has four undergraduate schools as well as twelve graduate and professional schools. Schools enrolling undergraduates include the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School, and the School of Nursing. Penn’s “One University Policy” allows students to enroll in classes in any of Penn’s twelve schools. Among its highly ranked graduate and professional schools are a law school whose first professor wrote the first draft of the United States Constitution, the first school of medicine in North America (Perelman School of Medicine, 1765), and the first collegiate business school (Wharton School, 1881).
