(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in mathematical phylodynamics

How did the current biodiversity emerge? How does a single fertilised egg develop into a functioning organism? Which factors govern the spread of a pathogen during an epidemic? The answers to these questions depend on the underlying population dynamic processes, i.e. the replication and change of individuals. Within the EU-funded PhyCogy project (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101001077; ERC consolidator grant), we strive to formulate and characterise models describing the replication and change of individuals. This project aims to generalize these so-called phylodynamic models into a coherent framework, which will be applied within the ERC project to answer questions like those above. Applications span the fields of macroevolution, epidemiology, and developmental biology. The generalisability of the developed framework will enable future application across biological scales in areas like microbiology, virology, ecology, immunology, and cancer research.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in single-cell phylodynamics

How does a single fertilised egg develop into a functioning organism? The answer to this question depends on the underlying population dynamic process, i.e. the division and change of individual cells. Within the EU-funded PhyCogyproject (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101001077; ERC consolidator grant), one of our goals is to introduce phylodynamics into developmental biology, by formulating and characterizing models describing the division and change of individual cells. With the resulting so-called phylodynamic modelling framework, we will move from a qualitative description of developmental processes to a quantification of developmental processes.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Researcher in Computational Metabolomics

The Zamboni lab hosts the Clinical Metabolomics Analysis Center, which is a technology hub affiliated with the Swiss initiatives on personalized health (PHRT, www.sfa-phrt.ch). Thereby, it is tightly embedded in numerous projects and collaborations aiming at integrating deep molecular data into clinical decisions. Here, the focus of the Center is on democratizing metabolomics and lipidomics analyses for broad adoption in clinical research and diagnostic data streams. A speciality of the group is the development of high-throughput untargeted LC-MS methods. These are critical to swiftly screening large cohorts of clinical samples, drug libraries, or genetic mutants. With a steadily growing volume of samples and studies, novel opportunities emerge. These opportunities include learning across studies, implementing novel MS2 fragmentation strategies that maximize the amount of non-redundant information obtained in each study, aggregating different types of information for the task of structural elucidation, and exploiting novel types of fragmentation technology.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Researcher (PhD) in Real-time Movement Feedback for Stroke and Parkinson’s Disease

Gait deficits are one of the leading causes of dissatisfaction after neurorehabilitation and have long-ranging implications for mobility, secondary complications, and reduced quality of life. Through targeted rehabilitation motor improvements in gait are possible, and these frequently generalize to improvements in walking speed. Typically, practitioners target their rehabilitation practice based on implicit knowledge and unstructured pattern matching. In parallel, there is a growing body of evidence that real-time feedback can be beneficial to (re-) learning motor patterns after stroke or in Parkinson’s disease. However, there is little comparison between different feedback designs and modalities.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in proteomics and peptide chemistry for the development of protease responsive micro-and nanoscale diagnostic tools

Proteases are an exceptionally important and informative class of enzymes, making up 10% of all current drug targets and offering potentially useful diagnostic information. Developing robust methods for site selective detection of protease activity has the potential to advance understanding of fundamental disease mechanisms, aid in developing targeted therapies, and inform treatment. We recently developed a method to detect proteolytic activity via proteases responsive ultrasound contrast agents based on lipid shelled microbubbles (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35064638/, patent submitted). Integration of suitable peptides for effective cleave by target proteases is key for clinical translation and the success of this methods.

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Urban Data and Modeling Science

The project “Comparative Ecology of Cities: Understanding Patterns, Processes and Properties of Cities to Improve Urban Conditions” is centred on the proposition that urban pattern-process-function relationships provide valuable knowledge to advance the science of urban planning. The project builds upon emerging theoretical and empirical evidence that patterns of human settlement systems (urban patterns) shape social and ecological processes (urban processes), and such processes, in turn, dictate the key demands of urban living such as social relations, mobility, economic exchanges, biophysical environment, ecological conditions, etc. (urban functions). The project will investigate such pattern-process-function relationships across several cities to develop generalizations that can be used as urban planning and design principles to guide sustainable urban development.
