The oral microbiota is emerging as an important driver of local and systemic inflammatory disease. In the Apollo (Stacy) Lab, we decipher metabolic communication between the oral microbiota and host in the settings of gum disease (periodontitis) and oral cancer. In particular, we analyze how host-derived metabolites shape the ecological balance between commensals and pathogens, and how this balance in turns tunes host immune responses. We leverage an interdisciplinary approach involving bacterial genetics, genomics, animal models, immune profiling, and human samples. Our long-term goal is to translate host-derived metabolites into microbiota-directed therapies.

The Nemet lab focuses on understanding the communication between gut microorganisms and their host. In particular, we study how microbial metabolic pathways contribute to overall changes in host physiology, and cardiometabolic disease susceptibility. The laboratory works on identifying novel pathways of clinical relevance with mechanistic links to human diseases by use of metabolomics (mass spectrometry) and clinical studies in tandem with animal studies. Candidates with experience in molecular biology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or a related field are encouraged to apply. Experience in cardiovascular biology and animal surgery are desirable but not required.

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in Dr. Byron Lee’s laboratory in the Department of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences. The laboratory is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Genitourinary Malignancies Research Center and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our lab seeks to understand how chromatin modifier gene mutations affect bladder cancer initiation, progression, and therapy response. We also have a strong interest in understanding the molecular anatomy of the benign urinary tract. We use a variety of biochemical, molecular biology, next generation sequencing (including single cell sequencing), and genome editing techniques to study these processes in cell culture, murine, and patient-derived models such as organoids and xenografts. You will also have the opportunity to work directly with patient specimens obtained from our large clinical practice.
