22 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Karolinska Institute, Sweden

The postdoctoral project will focus on pharmacoepidemiological research and causal inference methods using data from national health, population and quality registers. The aim is to investigate the impact of socioeconomic factors on antidiabetic medications (ADM) use, discontinuation and type 2 diabetes (T2D) consequences such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure and retinopathy. The overarching purpose of the project is to identify differences in patterns of ADM use across socioeconomic groups, which will ultimately provide evidence for the development of targeted interventions for treatment management and guidelines increasing awareness about high-risk groups among the vulnerable population of T2D patients. The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by the principal investigator Dr. Laura Pazzagli, supported by all members of the research team (including international collaborators) and other members of staff at the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology (CPE) where the project will be conducted. CPE was established in 2005 and has become a dynamic research environment at the intersection of academia, healthcare, regulatory authorities and the pharmaceutical industry. CPE is one of the largest academic pharmacoepidemiology centres in Europe, with active Nordic, European and international collaborations.

The project will focus on aspects related to: NK cell correlations to vaccine outcome, impact of vaccination on NK cells at a transcriptomic and proteomic level, and mechanistic insights of T cell response through NK cell modulation. The successful candidate will drive a multidisciplinary project combining bioinformatic analyses as well as functional characterization using in vitro and in vivo systems. The project will make use of valuable human material derived from clinical trials with vaccination platforms including live-attenuated virus vaccine (against YFV), inactivated vaccines (against JEV and TBEV), and mRNA vaccine (against SARS-CoV-2).

A postdoctoral position is now open in projects devoted to exploring the role of inflammation and its resolution in the brain, with particular attention to Alzheimer’s disease. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, as well as presentation/publication of results.

We investigate genetic disorders on a molecular level in a translational research setting in order to understand disease mechanisms, apply new knowledge in genetic diagnostics, improve prognosis assessment and develop new treatment strategies. Our research group consists of four teams and our main interests are hematological malignancies, with a particular focus on chronic lymphocytic leukemia, lymphoma and pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia, metabolic bone disorders, and cancer genetics.

The candidate is expected to play a major role in molecular analysis, scientific hypothesis generation, presentation of results and manuscript preparation. The candidate will work on several projects regarding coding and non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, and their role in acquired resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immunotherapy. The duties involve working with mouse xenograft tumor models, patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), routine cell biology work and establishment of molecular methods, as well as computational and biostatistical analyses of expression array data. The candidate will be working closely together with a senior wet lab molecular biologist, to ensure high quality output from all steps.

The postdoc will carry out research with a focus on the development of new theory and methods and will develop as a researcher in statistics/biostatistics. Research topics in areas of interest to other members at the Unit of Biostatistics are preferred. The Unit of Biostatistics and Karolinska Institutet can provide excellent support and an ideal environment for the new postdoc to thrive. Our primary research interest is infection and cancer in humans. Ingemar Ernbergs group has conducted research on Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cancer for more than forty years. We particularly study EBV-infection, which can also be used as a model to study early steps in in vitro transformation, viral genetic switches, non-genetic variation and cancer cell metabolism.

The applicant will be employed by the Cancer Research Funds of Radiumhemmet but associated with and located at Department of Oncology-Pathology, Karolinska Institutet. The main objectives of this Department are basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the Department. 35 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 100 PhD students. 

We have an opening for an individual wishing to join a multidisciplinary project aimed to understand the role of lipid mediators in lung disease. The successful candidate will be expected to use and further develop mass spectrometry-based methods for quantification of lipid mediators including eicosanoids (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes), novel octadecanoids (see https://bit.ly/3xQjr5K) and structural lipids. Analyses will involve further development of novel chromatography approaches including chiral and UPC2 methods for applications in large scale clinical studies as well as experimental models to map the biochemical role of lipid mediators in the pathobiology of lung disease. Functional studies will be performed in multiple cell types, in ex vivo lung tissue as well as in animal models to generate a biochemical map of both pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators. The Lipid Laboratory at the Department of Medicine (H7), Karolinska Institutet focuses on studies of human adipose tissue and its pathophysiological role in promoting metabolic complications such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. The laboratory is composed of about 15 scientists and support staff. We have a long track record in the field of translational medicine and several international collaborations resulting in important contributions to the research field. Our work is based on examinations in large, carefully phenotyped prospective clinical cohorts and on well-established in vitro cell models using a number of standard and state-of-art methodologies (e.g. single cell RNA sequencing, multicolor flow cytometry, high throughput screens and cell phenotype analysis) as well as in-house developed techniques.

The research group collaborates with Associate Professor Ellen Lacobaeus, Department of Neuroscience. The focus of the research group is to explore the immunomodulatory and trophic properties of mesenchymal stromal cells in vivo and assess their therapeutic potential. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to join our team who is dedicated to improving the understanding of breast cancer and factors related to survival. Who has a high risk of dying from the disease and why? Breast cancer is a very heterogeneous disease both in tumor biology as well as metastatic capacity and time to fatal disease. For instance, younger women are known to have a worse survival compared to middle-aged women, but the underlying reasons are not well understood. A special interest of the Lindström group is to understand the long-term risk 20-30 years after primary diagnosis since we and others have shown that estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer patients have a steady and late risk of metastatic and fatal disease. A variety of approaches are used in the Lindström group to answer these research questions, and the group mainly conducts studies by annotating information on tumor characteristics in patient cohorts and clinical studies.

This project is focused on development of a mechanism-based approach for identifying and assessing the toxicity of endocrine disrupting chemicals that is applicable in the regulatory setting. The project is centered around applying Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) methodology to organize, integrate and interpret different types of toxicity data (in silico, in vitro, in vivo and human) and draw conclusions about endocrine disrupting properties of chemicals. The project builds on several on-going projects and will make use of phenotypic and molecular effect data, such as histopathological and -omics data, generated in these projects. A significant part of the project will also be to identify and integrate existing toxicity data from the scientific literature and databases. Focus is on inclusion of data from NAMs in human health risk assessment.

The Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM) carries out activities focusing on the use of modified biomolecules, cells and cellular products as novel therapeutic agents and the identification and study of suitable biomolecular and cellular targets for therapy and diagnosis. We are currently looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join the EL Andaloussi research group. The main focus of the research group is to work on the delivery of macromolecules to target cells in vivo. Our research aims to develop new and innovative nanoparticles that can transport proteins, RNAs or gene therapies to the target tissues in a safe and efficient way.
