(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher Photopharmacology

Photopharmacology is a rapidly emerging field at the interface of the chemical and medical sciences aiming at high precision therapy. Being among the founding fathers of photopharmacology (together with the Trauner group, currently at UPenn), our expertise in molecular photoswitches and light-driven rotary motors gives us a unique advantage to design the smart medicine of the future. Unlike optogenetics, widely used in neuroscience relying on genetic modification of the organism, the basis for photopharmacology is the design of drugs with intrinsic switchable functions. Specifically, this means that in bioactive molecular components (common pharmaceuticals) designed with intrinsic light-switchable units, the biological activity can be switched on and off with high precision on command using light. The use of light as external trigger allows high precision activation of a drug in space and time in a non-invasive manner. This opens fascinating opportunities for precise targeting of e.g. tumors, and bacterial infections. High precision cancer chemotherapy, fighting bacterial resistance or infectious biofilms are among the prospects for future clinical applications. In a more fundamental scientific perspective control of specific pathways in complex biological networks open numerous opportunities. Our Nobel prize winning research on molecular machines (light-driven chiral molecular switches and motors) introducing directional motion at the nanoscale enabled us to explore the basic principles of photopharmacological agents. We pioneered photoswitchable antibiotics and quorum sensing molecules, interfering with bacterial communication and very recently demonstrated the regulation of the circadian clock in human cells.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Post-doc in mathematical analysis (1.0 FTE) (222646)

A 1-year postdoc position in mathematical analysis is available at the Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. The position is situated in the Systems Control and Applied Analysis group and is funded by Alden Waters’ FSE research grant. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on theoretical or explicit aspects of the study of dispersive estimates for Maxwell’s equations. You are also expected to interact scientifically with other research staff and students, as well as organize and participate in seminars. The position comes with a small travel budget to give research seminars at other universities. The position comes with mild teaching duties (in English, about 10% of the appointment). Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc: How do the senses affect visual and temporal perception? (1.0 FTE) (222636)

This is a fixed-term, two-year post-doctoral position. The research project focuses on the question of how subtle changes to the senses affect visual and temporal perception. For example, if your eyes’ pupils dilate (become larger), the amount of light that enters your eyes increases, while the sharpness of vision decreases. In this way, subtle changes in pupil size fundamentally change how visual information reaches your brain. But it is currently poorly understood how such changes affect subsequent processing of visual and temporal information. For example, if more light enters the eye because your pupils dilate, do visual events also seem to last longer (analogous to the effect of actual brightness increases on time perception)?

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc in Protein and RNA structural changing during the eukaryotic cell cycle (222180H)

Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD student or a 3-year postdoctoral research position, starting as soon as possible, in the research group of Prof. Matthias Heinemann, (https://www.heinemannlab.eu) at the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute. We have a PhD position in Protein and RNA structural changing during the eukaryotic cell cycle as well: https://www.rug.nl/(…)ils=00347-02S000986P

The eukaryotic cell cycle is a fascinating research topic. While we know many of the cell biological changes and biochemical control mechanisms, it turns out that there is still so much that we do not understand. For instance, we just recently showed that also metabolism is dynamic during the cell cycle, and a metabolic oscillator might even exert cell cycle control (Papagiannakis et al, 2017, Molecular Cell; Litsios et al, 2019, Nature Cell Biology).
