PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD positions in Digital Circular Construction

This PhD position is one of three scholarship positions funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NRC)’s 1-2-TRE-STEG project. The goal of 1-2-TRE-STEG is to achieve circularity in the Norwegian wood-based construction. Within the Norwegian society, the sector takes a central position with wood being a widely used building material in Norway and a logical material choice for Norwegians, as their country’s surface area is covered by 37% of forest. However, by using so much wood the sector generates millions of tons of wood waste on an annual basis. This project is part of a larger effort by Norway’s public and private sectors to improve the performance and circularity of the Norwegian wood-based building industry.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate within Gas Flotation for Subsea Produced Water Treatment

Gas flotation is a common process for treatment of produced water. It relies on dispersion or nucleation of gas bubbles and attachment of oil droplets or solids to the bubbles to enhance their rising velocity. The goal in this project is to study how a range of fluid properties influence the removal efficiency of oil and solids during high temperature high pressure gas flotation. Addition of flocculants to improve the water treatment efficiency, and determination of the working mechanisms of the flocculants will also be important aspects. A HPHT gas flotation rig will be further developed and used to study water treatment efficiencies, while microfluidic methodologies will be used to provide better mechanistic understanding of the process.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in modelling of bridges for accurate estimation of remaining service life

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Railway networks in the developed world consists of a large number of bridges that have reached or surpassed their design life, in Norway for instance, the majority of the 900 steel bridges in the network were constructed and put into service more than 75 years ago. It is not possible to replace all these bridges in the foreseeable future, due to the enormous cost associated with interruption to operation and construction of new bridges. It is also not desirable from an environmental perspective to replace a bridge that is safe and fully functional in the first place or can be made so by correct maintenance and repair.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Predictive Digital Twin for Offshore Wind Energy

The Norwegian government is presenting a major initiative in 2023 to promote offshore wind power. The plan is to install 1,500 offshore turbines that will produce a total of 30GW energy by 2040. Even though considered as a promising sustainable energy source, wind power is highly intermittent and non-dispatchable because it is a variable power source. Digital twin is an enabling technology to accurately forecast energy production from a wind farm by providing a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the behaviour of the wind farm and its components under different weather conditions and operational scenarios. The aim of the research is to leverage digital twin technology for offshore wind farms to enable accurate wind energy forecast through modelling, simulation, and optimization of wind farms’ behavior under uncertain weather conditions and operational scenarios.

PhD position summary/title: PhD within Simulation and analysis of drop-turbulence interactions

We have a vacancy for a PhD position at Department of Chemical Engineering. The position is part of the FRIPRO project “Establishing next-generation pioneering models for interface mass transfer, breakup and coalescence in turbulent flow”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

The understanding of droplet dynamics in turbulent flow is important for a variety of industrial processes. In this project we are interested in the detailed analyses of drop-turbulence interactions. We are particularly interested in understanding the drop-turbulence interactions in the cases where such interactions result in breakup of droplets. Numerical simulations of turbulent flow (resolved scales) with dispersed droplets (described by the phase field method) can provide the necessary flow fields needed to analyse the drop-turbulence interactions. Canonical flows such as the channel will be adopted for the multiphase flow simulations.
