PhD position summary/title: Doctoral candidates in Statistics and Probability
The MATHCODA Doctoral Training Unit is a doctoral program covering a coherent set of themes around the ideation and study of novel mathematical tools for dealing with high-dimensional and complex data structures, with applications ranging from life sciences to engineering and finance. The main rationale behind our project is the necessity of training a new generation of researchers, possessing a full mastery of the mathematical tools that are needed for modelling and statistically analysing data structures displaying non-standard features, such as high-dimensional components, complicated topological structures, or long-range dependence. The proposed DTU will be led by seven supervisors from Luxembourg University – each of them a scientific leader, specializing in one or more facets of mathematical statistics, probability theory, and their applications. According to our vision, the interaction between the distinct research groups participating in MATHCODA will provide to the doctoral candidates an invaluably rich learning environment, as well as an ideal springboard for their subsequent careers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in Spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry
The Geophysics Laboratory (GL) focuses on climate, sea level variability and geodynamics. The primary goals include satellite geodesy of new remote sensing applications and obtaining reliable geodetic measurements of environmental change and assessing the influence of human and natural factors in those changes. To do so, the group has developed a patented differential free-fall gradiometer as part of our activities in scientific metrology, advanced high-accuracy Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) techniques, provided interpretation of time variable gravity from space and improved the modelling of environmental effects on geodetic observations. In particular, the team investigates changes in the water cycle, the mass changes in the polar ice sheets, the dynamics of the Yellowstone Caldera. Additionally, the team focuses on space-borne GNSS-R for soil moisture and grazing angle GNSS-R for sea-ice studies over sea-ice covered regions. The University of Luxembourg is seeking to hire a highly motivated and outstanding researcher in the area of space-borne GNSS-R within the Geophysics Laboratory, led by Prof. Olivier Francis. We’re looking for people driven by excellence, excited about innovation, and looking to make a difference. If this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place!

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Robotic Perception and Situation Understanding
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) was created in 2009 as the first interdisciplinary research center at the UL to fuel the development of high-value ICT services and applications through cutting-edge research and supply competent people for building this sector of the economy. The Centre aims to achieve high impact and excellence beyond the academic community by collaborating with external partners such as industries, government bodies, institutions, and international actors. The Automation & Robotics Research Group (ARG), headed by Prof. Dr. Holger VOOS, comprises around 15-20 team members (PhDs and PostDocs) and conducts research around the three research lines: (1) situational awareness for robots and autonomous systems, (2) optimization-based approaches for planning and decision-making, and (3) advanced control and novel actuators. These research lines are transversally used in four application areas, namely autonomous robots (both aerial and ground), Industry 4.0, space systems, and energy systems. The ARG has several robotics labs that feature an indoor experimental arena with a motion capture system and count with a variety of ready-to-use fully equipped robotic platforms, such as more than 20 multi-rotor aerial robots, two fully-equipped four-legged walking robots (i.e. Boston Dynamics Spot and Unitree Go1), several humanoid robots, a couple of industrial robot manipulators, and two fully equipped cars for autonomous driving.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Developing Machine Learned Force Fields to Predict the Stability of Molecular Crystals
A method that can accurately and efficiently predict the stable phase of molecular crystals will greatly aid the development of new pharmaceutical drugs [1]. If a drug is manufactured in a metastable phase that later converts to the stable phase, it can render the drug insoluble and ineffective. For instance, ritovanir, an HIV treatment, had to be recalled from the market after it began to convert to a more stable phase. The mistake cost approximately $250 million. There are several reasons why predicting the stable phase of a molecular crystal is challenging. The thermodynamic stability of a structure depends on the minute balance between intramolecular and intermolecular forces, in particular van der Waals interactions, Pauli repulsion, and hydrogen bonding, all of which necessitate a quantum mechanical treatment. Additionally, the free energy of the molecular crystal includes nonnegligible anharmonic vibrational effects. A state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) method developed in our group is the leading method for accurately predicting the stability of molecular crystals [2]. However, it is quite computationally demanding. We want to create next-generation machine learned force fields that can produce equivalently accurate results at a fraction of the cost, a game changer for drug development.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in resource allocation for hybrid terrestrial/non-terrestrial 6G networks
The research group focuses on wireless/satellite communications and networking and is headed by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas. The research areas focus on the formulation, modelling, design, and analysis of future 5G and beyond communication networks that are capable of supporting new services in a cost-efficient manner. Use cases of interest include IoT verticals, unmanned aerial vehicles, integrated satellite-space-terrestrial networks, quantum communications and key distribution, spectrum management and coexistence, tactile Internet, and autonomous transportation. As far as technical enablers are concerned, we leverage expertise on massive MIMO cell-free communications, smart-radio environments through the use of intelligent surfaces, machine-type and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, edge computing and caching, RAN slicing, and network softwarization and visualization. Finally, due to the large-scale nature, complexity, and heterogeneity of 5G and beyond networks, for their analysis and optimization we use tools such as artificial intelligence/machine learning, graph theory and graph-signal processing, and convex/non-convex optimization. Furthermore, our activities are experimentally driven and supported by the SDR CommLab, the SDN Lab, the 5G-Space Lab, our SW Simulators, and our OTA Facilties.
