(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researchers
Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our lab is interested in cancer, stemness, and neurodegeneration.
(1) The tumor suppressor p53, metabolism, and autophagy. We are interested in the regulation and functions of the preeminent tumor suppressor p53. Our results have revealed an important role for p53 in modulating metabolic pathways that are critical for biosynthesis and redox balance. We are investigating the function of p53 as both a sentinel and a regulator for metabolic activities. Furthermore, we are identifying and characterizing metabolic alterations that drive tumor initiation and progression. A recent extension of this research area is to define the role of metabolism and autophagy in stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and cancer stem cells.
(2) Protein quality control, aging, and neurodegeneration. Our lab recently identified two protein quality control (PQC) systems, which consist of tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins and poly-Asp/Glu proteins, respectively. Unlike canonical PQC systems, these new systems are independent of ATP and multifunctional. They are highly effective in suppressing protein misfolding and aggregation. We are investigating their mechanisms of action; their roles in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and polyglutamine diseases; and their utility in treating these diseases.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postodoctoral positon in Ophthalmology
The University of Pennsylvania Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for research on the pathobiology and genetic risk factors of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The successful candidate will participate in a large NIH-funded study uniquely focused on identifying phenotypic and genetic variants associated with POAG in African Americans. Our group is interested in understanding the molecular processes that occur in the eye in course of glaucoma, which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Establishing the function of genes associated with POAG is of great importance. We are interested in establishing gene function by generating in vitro and in vivo models to better understand mechanisms underlying retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration in glaucoma. These will be used to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in cancer immunotherapy
Two post-doctoral positions in the laboratory of Dr. Yi Fan are available to develop new therapeutics by targeting tumor microenvironment.
Much of our work is directed at understanding the mechanisms by which tumor stroma regulates tumor immunity, growth, and therapy resistance in brain tumor. Our study focuses on reprogramming tumor microenvironment to block tumor progression, reverse tumor immune suppression, and overcome tumor resistance to checkpoint blockade and CAR T immunotherapy.

About The University of Pennsylvania, United States – Official Website
The University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university claims a founding date of 1740 and is one of the nine colonial colleges chartered prior to the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin, Penn’s founder and first president, advocated an educational program that trained leaders in commerce, government, and public service, similar to a modern liberal arts curriculum with a practical perspective.
Penn has four undergraduate schools as well as twelve graduate and professional schools. Schools enrolling undergraduates include the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School, and the School of Nursing. Penn’s “One University Policy” allows students to enroll in classes in any of Penn’s twelve schools. Among its highly ranked graduate and professional schools are a law school whose first professor wrote the first draft of the United States Constitution, the first school of medicine in North America (Perelman School of Medicine, 1765), and the first collegiate business school (Wharton School, 1881).
