Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE OF THE PREDICTIVE MIND AND MEDITATION

The project aims to determine the plasticity of the predictive mind using meditation. It starts from the notion that our brain is fundamentally an organ of prediction, continuously predicting or constructing a view of the world based on past experience and statistical regularities in the environment in service of (future) action. It builds on the proposal (Laukkonen & Slagter, 2021) that certain meditation practices can reduce predictive processing through physical and mental in-action: by bringing the practitioner in the present moment, unaffected by what just happened or may happen in the future. Adopting this perspective of meditation not only inspires a new understanding of the effects of meditation on brain, mind (e.g., attention, the sense of self, awareness), and well-being, but also opens many interesting research questions about the plasticity and automaticity of predictive processing. The postdoc would uniquely contribute and drive research on this topic.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC: PHYSICS OF ICE-BINDING PROTEINS

Ice-binding proteins protect many living systems from critical frost damage by stalling the growth of ice crystals. Despite this crucial protective function, the physics of cryoprotection by ice-binding proteins is not well understood. This project aims to unravel the physical principles that enable ice-binding proteins to modulate the water-ice phase transition. We explore and exploit innovative biophysical (single-molecule) approaches to directly resolve dynamic interactions between ice, water, and proteins on the nanometer length scale and we develop new physical models to capture the underlying physics. New insights into the physics of ice-binding proteins can help to harness and optimise their cryoprotective potential in e.g. healthcare, crop protection, food technology, and anti-icing approaches.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POST DOC – DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR TRANSITIONS IN AGRI-FOOD SYSTEMSACANCY TITLE

As postdoc at Athena your work will consist of a combination of research, project and teaching activities, that will strengthen your skill set, expand your academic expertise and build your academic portfolio. For this specific function, we are looking for a postdoc to work on the newly awarded TRUSTyFOOD project within the Horizon Europe framework. The project aims to contribute to the successful food system transition towards more sustainable and transparent supply chains. Together with partners across Europe (Crotia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, and Portugal) we will clarify the benefits and opportunities that blockchain technology can offer to stakeholders throughout the food chain by understanding why communities accept or reject blockchain-based projects, and by learning from previous projects.

Deadline : 01/09/2022.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC IN ATMOSPHERIC INVERSE MODELING OF EUROPEAN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The European research project COCO2 develops new infrastructure for atmospheric monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions in preparation for the launch of the CO2M satellite constellation in 2025/2026. The CO2M satellites will measure the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane along with other supporting parameters. Within COCO2 we develop the WRF-CTDAS atmospheric inverse modelling system, which is designed to translate atmospheric measurements of greenhouse gases into their corresponding emissions. The aim is to develop the tools needed to evaluate the quality of national inventory reports on greenhouse gas emissions to the UNFCCC using independent atmospheric information.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC IN HIGH-RESOLUTION ATMOSPHERIC MODELING OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Dutch researchers join forces in the infrastructure program Ruisdael to study the interactions between emissions of air pollutants and meteorology in The Netherlands. A main goal is to investigate urban greenhouse gas emissions and how to monitor them using atmospheric measurements. To do this, we developed a new version of the high-resolution Dutch Atmospheric Large Eddy Simulation (DALES) model to simulate the dispersion of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from the Dutch Randstad urban area. The next step, and main objective of this postdoc position, is to evaluate the model using data from Ruisdael measurement campaigns, investigate the origin of the observed variability, and use the outcome to improve the model further and support the design of the measurement network.

Deadline : August 31, 2022

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION: CELL TYPE SPECIFIC FUNCTION IN VISUAL CORTEX DURING MULTISENSORY PROCESSING

This postdoc project is funded through a collaborative grant from NWO (ENW-M-2), which involves a synergistic collaboration with prof. Cyriel Pennartz from the University of Amsterdam and a 2nd postdoc position at UvA-SILS. The VU position will focus on disentangling the cellular substrates during multisensory processing, whereas the postdoc position at the UvA will elucidate the contribution of ensembles of neurons to the same standardized behavioral task. We envision surplus value by constantly aligning the 2 postdoc projects through regular meetings (see also https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.06.22.449366v1).

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
