PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Application of Machine Learning to Advance Bathymetric Seafloor Mapping and Data Compilation
As our dependence on the oceans grows and the health of the oceans becomes threatened, knowledge of the depth of the seafloor (bathymetry) is essential for understanding climate dynamics, marine ecosystems, resource management, risk managements and much more.
Recognizing the critical importance of seafloor mapping, the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project was launched in 2017 with the goal of inspiring ocean mapping and delivering a complete map of the world’s ocean floor by the year 2030 for the benefit of humankind. While the available high-resolution seafloor mapping data has increased, covering about 6% of the world’s oceans in 2017 and almost 25 % in 2024, new technologies and approaches will be needed to help fill the remaining 75% of the seafloor that has not yet been directly mapped.
This PhD position at Stockholm University focuses on leveraging machine learning (ML) to identify errors in large bathymetric datasets and applying ML techniques like “super-resolution” to enhance acquired bathymetry data.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computer and Systems Sciences, with focus on Data Science
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize various sectors of society and has the potential to bring about numerous positive changes. In healthcare, AI can improve diagnosis and optimize the allocation of limited medical resources. In education, it can personalize learning and enhance student learning outcomes. In the business world, AI can optimize investment strategies, reduce financial risk, and automate processes such as recruitment and resource allocation. In policing, AI can aid in the identification of criminal or fraudulent activities and support automated surveillance.
The goal of this PhD student project is to improve the foundations and systematic design of fair, transparent, explainable, and human-centered AI, with emphasis on algorithms, theory, and applications. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and scientific interests, the project can be directed towards algorithm development, applications and implementations, or underlying statistics and mathematical foundations, or exploration of social and legal aspects, or a combination of these research directions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Pollinator Genomics
The Department of Zoology invites applications for a four-year PhD position based at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm. The project is aimed at investigating temporal patterns of population structure and genomic diversity in pollinating insect populations. The analyses will use state-of-the-art genomic and palaeogenomic methods with focus on recovering DNA from museum specimens collected throughout the last 200 years. This will be a conservation genomics project part of a research programme funded by the Swedish Research Council and focused on investigating the genomic effects of population decline in insect pollinators. The PhD student will join the research group led by David Díez-del-Molino (see www.palaeogenetics.com) at the Centre for Palaeogenetics located on the Stockholm University campus.
