PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher
As technology increasingly integrates human and machine/robot operations, ensuring robust, seamless control in environments with variable or limited connectivity becomes a critical challenge. The successful candidate for this Doctoral Researcher position will explore advanced methods for shared human-robot control that dynamically adapt to communication failures or delays. This research will focus on enabling human operators to interact with local edge controllers that maintain safety and performance, even under unpredictable network conditions. Central to this effort is developing systems that learn human operator objectives and preferences over time, ensuring a fluid transition between manual input and autonomous or safety controller interventions. By testing these approaches in both simulated and real-world scenarios, this work aims to deliver reliable, data-efficient, and explainable control solutions that optimize productivity and safety across diverse applications, ranging from remote robotics to heavy machinery in forestry, construction, mining, and logistics.
Deadline : 24.02.2025
(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher
We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in the areas of Semiotics, Translation Studies, and similar. The Doctoral Researcher will work primarily on intersemiotic translations across different virtual spaces (XR, video games, virtual platforms).
The candidate’s work will be focused on conducting doctoral research towards the completion of a doctoral dissertation within the InterReal project. This will mainly consist of research activities including research planning, selection of corpora, case studies, semiotic analysis, article preparation, dissemination, and publishing. Moreover, the candidate is expected to participate in project-wide research efforts, in regular project meetings and in the activities of the multidisciplinary research team. The candidate is expected to present their research at seminars and academic conferences.
In particular, the Doctoral Researcher will focus on intersemiotic translations of objects, avatars, and spaces across different virtual environments. The work will include semiotic and translational analysis on several case studies making use of methods such as shift analysis, Actor-Network mapping, introspective methods, or other applicable methods utilised in semiotics and translation research. Additionally, the candidate will realise a few self-made intersemiotic translations to critically engage with the translation process as well.
Deadline : 10th of February 2025

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher
We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in the areas of Architecture, Spatial Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction Design and Game Research. The Doctoral Researcher will work primarily on Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, conceptualized as instances of translation between virtual “alternative realities” and the physical reality.
The candidate’s work will be focused on conducting doctoral research towards the completion of a doctoral dissertation within the InterReal project. This will mainly consist of research activities including research planning, workshop organising, data gathering, data analysis, article preparation, dissemination, and publishing. Moreover, the candidate is expected to participate in project-wide research efforts, in regular project meetings and in the activities of the multidisciplinary research team. The candidate is expected to present their research at seminars and academic conferences.
In particular, the Doctoral Researcher will focus on Augmented and Mixed Reality technologies, both by analysing existing applications and by engaging in research through design. The work will include deploying some qualitative analysis methods related to case studies (e.g. interviews, focus groups), as well as methods related to research through design (workshops, creation of personas, prototyping, design fiction).

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (Spatial Audio Processing for Wearable Devices)
The successful candidate will pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Computing and Electrical Engineering (DPCEE). The offered contract at TAU is for 24 months with possible extension. The position has received funding by Meta Reality Labs (MRL) and researchers from MRL will be involved in co-supervisory and advisory roles. The candidate will additionally be part of a multidisciplinary team in the Audio Research Group of TAU and will be expected to push the boundaries of current knowledge and technology in this field, publishing research findings in reputable journals and presenting them at international conferences. There can be also opportunities for research visits at MRL headquarters in Seattle, WA, USA.
The doctorate’s area of research is on data-driven and context-driven spatial audio processing of real sound scenes, captured by microphones mounted on wearable devices, such as head-mounted displays or smart glasses. The research can involve, among other possibilities, acoustic scene analysis, source separation, spatial and semantic audio enhancement, and personalized spatial audio rendering of the captured recordings. The methods that will be developed are expected to contribute to the next generation of technologies involved in immersive media recording and reproduction, augmented hearing, and mixed reality experiences. The doctoral candidate will focus on investigating specific problems in the above research topics and push the current state-of-the-art. Collection and curation of recordings of natural scenes that can serve the above research tasks is also expected to be conducted during the doctorate.
