Eligible candidate may Apply as soon as possible.
(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, project Signal Recovery in Noisy Spatial Data
The project “Signal Recovery in Noisy Spatial Data” is funded by the Academy of Finland and develops dimension reduction methods for noisy multivariate spatial data, especially in a blind source separation context.
The successful candidate will work in Professor Klaus Nordhausen´s research group. The work of the doctoral researcher will focus on developing novel blind source separation estimators for multivariate spatial data under different signal and noisy configurations together with tools to estimate the signal dimension. Algorithms for the methods shall be derived and implemented and evaluated in case studies.
The doctoral researcher will have a chance to contribute to teaching up to 5 % of the annual working hours.
Deadline : Open until filled
(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Grant funded Doctoral Researcher in Microclimates of Boreal Forests (FORCLIM)
The FORCLIM project, which spans climate science, forestry, ecology, and geography, seeks to uncover the dynamics of boreal forest climates using a cross-disciplinary approach. The project aims to generate a comprehensive understanding of Finland’s forest climates, focusing on how local environmental factors interact with climate dynamics across macroclimatic gradients. The FORCLIM will develop precise models of forest climates and explore their connections to forest features and the local environment. This research is crucial for understanding boreal ecosystem resilience and will support efforts to preserve boreal forests.
The Doctoral Researcher will join the BioGeoClimate Modelling Lab and be based in the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the University of Helsinki. Collaboration with the Weather and Climate Change Impacts Research Unit in Finnish Meteorological Institute is central to this position. The researcher will be grant funded for 48 months (2025–2028) and will engage in climate and environmental data processing, spatio-temporal data analysis and multivariate modeling.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher for a multidisciplinary intervention study
The BusyBaby study investigates how active and social musical activities, compared to equally active and social family circus activities, contribute to language development in infancy and toddler age. Furthermore, it will be determined how these effects are influenced by familial risk for language and reading deficits, intervention timing in relation to the children’s age and developmental stage, as well as social-emotional benefits of the interventions. The participants are aged 0 to 2 years, 50% of which have familial risk of dyslexia, randomized to either music or circus intervention groups. Effects of the interventions are investigated at three measurement points, before and after the 6-month intervention, and 1 year later at follow-up. Outcome measures consist of age-appropriate standardized questionnaires, language and neuropsychological tests, tests of musicality and motor abilities, and auditory event-related potentials with EEG to study neural processing of speech and music. Genetics related to dyslexia and language abilities are further investigated from DNA samples. The interventions and two first measurement points will take place mainly during 2024–2025; data analysis can be started immediately.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Plant Genetics
The doctoral researcher will be employed full-time for a fixed term of two years in the research group of assoc. prof. Roosa Laitinen. The earliest starting date is 1.1.2025.
Roosa Laitinen´ s research group utilizes both global and local accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana to understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms of plant resilience to changing environments. We combine methods of genetics and genomics to state-of-art molecular methods that are available for Arabidopsis.
We are seeking a doctoral researcher to work on a project investigating factors underlying light and temperature-mediated plasticity in flowers in A. thaliana. The aim is to use take advantage of the natural variation and mutants in A. thaliana and combine molecular and genetic methods with field studies to understand the adaptive potential of flower size plasticity in plants.
We seek highly motivated candidates with excellent communicational skills, and who can work both independently and in team environments. Fluency in English is expected. The candidate should have MSc degree in genetics, molecular biology or plant biology and to have proven academic ability to take initiative and think independently as well as experience in working with plants.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website
The University of Helsinki is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.
As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.
The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
