PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow: Universal Health Coverage and Democracy in India (HOPE Project)
The PhD candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary and multinational team of researchers with backgrounds in development studies, international studies, political science, and medical anthropology. HOPE is a collaboration between the University of Oslo (UiO), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in India, University of Pretoria in South Africa, and the University of Malawi. The PhD position will be based at the University of Oslo, but the candidate will collaborate closely with the research team in India. The appointment is a full-time PhD position for a period of three years with no compulsory teaching or administrative duties. The candidate will be expected to complete the 30 ECTS coursework requirement of the Faculty of Social Sciences PhD Programme as part of the doctoral training.
The successful candidate will conduct ethnographic, qualitative or mixed-methods fieldwork in India and develop a PhD project in the second track of the HOPE project, with a focus on ABP’s implementation and access to healthcare, preferably in rural areas of India and/or among Adivasi communities (Scheduled Tribes). We are seeking a candidate with a master’s degree in development studies, political science, area studies, sociology, anthropology or other relevant fields of study. We also welcome candidates with medical or health sciences degrees, if they can demonstrate experience with the use of qualitative social science methods at the master’s level. Previous experience from and knowledge of India is an advantage. Research questions may include: how ABP entitlements are interpreted and operationalised at the district and facility level; how marginalised populations (particularly Adivasi communities) navigate eligibility, enrolment, and care-seeking; and how state capacity, federalism, and electoral politics shape implementation outcomes. The position is part of MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, which is a Norwegian AI centre funded by the Research Council of Norway (2025-2030). It comprises more than 200 faculty members from many higher education institutions in Norway, in collaboration with numerous public and private sector partners. The primary objective of MishMash is to create, explore, and reflect on AI for, through, and in creative practices. PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Computational Nuclear Physics and Reactor Simulations
The Nuclear Physics group at UiO is involved in several research themes within the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC), from fundamental research within nuclear properties and nuclear fission, to more applied research within nuclear simulations and radionuclide production and speciation. This PhD Research Fellow will mostly contribute to nuclear simulations (reactor simulations).
The project will include reactor simulations of future reactor systems with a focus on systems relevant for Norway. The objective is to further develop and validate machine-learning surrogate models derived from high-fidelity multiphysics simulations of reactor transients and quantify how surrogate uncertainties propagate through system safety analysis of nuclear installations, using tools such as open simulations platforms.

As digital services permeate nearly every part of daily life, identity and access management are increasingly vital. New approaches such as self-sovereign identities and FIDO2 passkeys present promising possibilities and are being supported by policy and legal initiatives like eIDAS and the EU Digital Identity Wallet. At the same time, these systems may encounter obstacles, including limited user acceptance, privacy concerns, and inherited weaknesses from legacy authentication methods. The global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the rapid uptake of distributed renewable energy resources and the envisioned empowerment of prosumers. Thus, the traditional centralized grid is evolving into a highly distributed, data/ computation-intensive, AI-driven ecosystem in which smart meters, microgrids, aggregators, and edge devices actively participate in energy production, storage, consumption, and market interactions. This transition is fundamentally reshaping the structure of energy networks, shifting from centralized control to distributed, prosumer-driven ecosystems where interconnected multi-agents interact strategically in dynamic and uncertain environments. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimizes predictions or policies, energy systems are inherently multi-agent, strategic, and resource-constrained. Each agent has its own objective (e.g, cost, profit, comfort, sustainability, etc.) and interacts with other agents for shared resources (e.g., grid capacity, energy prices). In this new paradigm therefore, multiple autonomous agents including households, aggregators, and grid operators-must make real-time, interdependent decisions under shared constraints and competing objectives. Multi-agent learning and optimization show promise in this regard. Yet, the deployment of AI for decision making in critical infrastructure like the energy sector introduces challenges related to safety, fairness, accountability, transparency, and explainability (FATE), as well as compliance with emerging regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and Data Act.

The Martian atmosphere is a dynamic system, shaped by complex physical and chemical processes operating across a wide range of timescales. This PhD project will investigate dynamic phenomena and processes in the Martian atmosphere, combining space craft data analysis with opportunities for modelling depending on the candidate’s interests.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the science teams of three major Mars missions: the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, and the ESA orbiters ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) and Mars Express. Through these mis-sion affiliations, they will gain access to both archived and newly acquired instru-ment data, including spectroscopic measurements and solar energetic particle and plasma observations, as well as become part of a wider international network of Mars scientists and engineers.
The specific research direction will be shaped in part by the candidate’s interests and background. Possible avenues for investigation include:
- The Martian water cycle, focusing on near-surface water vapor distribu-tion, surface-atmosphere exchange, and radiative transfer modelling of SuperCam spectra from the Perseverance rover.
- Space weather impacts on atmospheric composition, using ozone retrievals from TGO and Mars Express alongside energetic particle and plasma measurements to characterise the atmospheric response to solar storm events.
- Martian aurora, investigating the spatial and temporal variability of auro-ral emissions using multispectral imaging and spectroscopic data from the Perse-verance rover (SuperCam, Mastcam-Z) and supporting orbital datasets.

The PhD Research Fellow is a part of HYDROGENi, a national Norwegian Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) dedicated to the research and innovations within hydrogen and ammonia crucial for reaching the 2030 and 2050 goals of the Norwegian hydrogen road map. The Centre is coordinated by SINTEF, with University of Oslo (UiO) as one of the partners.
The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Electrochemistry group at the Department of Chemistry which consists of around 25 highly dedicated professors, researchers, postdocs, PhD Research Fellows, engineers, admin, master and exchange students. The group is located in the new Life Science Building which offers modern research facilities. The group is among the world-leading in solid-state electrochemistry and materials science of proton-conducting oxides for electrochemical energy conversion technologies such as proton ceramic fuel cells and electrolysers. These technologies are central in the transition to renewable energy and in the electrification of industrial processes.
The PhD Research Fellowship will broadly address mixed ionic/electronic conducting oxygen/steam electrodes, where the group have extensive activities in novel perovskites combined with exsolution of metal nanoparticles. The goal of the PhD will be to seek mechanistic insight into the electrode polarization processes as well as strategies for improving performance by optimization of composition, microstructure, and the interface to the proton-conducting electrolyte. PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Science and Technology Studies (STS)
The licensing system is a key arrangement in Norwegian environmental policy and is both a tool of democracy and a tool for the appropriation of land and natural resources for societal and economic ends. The goal of the APPROPRIATE project is to investigate the licensing system: how different valuation practices play out in planning and decisions making processes, how economic reasoning and other forms of expertise are taken into account, and how dilemmas and conflicts in processes towards accomplishing good licensing procedures are negotiated and handled. The licensing system will be analyzed with a point of departure in the contemporary situation, but will also study the licensing arrangement in its broader historical, political and economic context.
APPROPRIATE will focus on two empirical cases in particular: aquaculture and wind power. The PhD position is dedicated to the case of wind power. Modern vessels produce vast amounts of multivariate data streams. The project addresses the development of trustworthy statistical and machine learning methods for anomaly detection in such streaming data (time series), potentially extended to spatio‑temporal settings. PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in transport mode detection with location privacy
Automatic human activity detection (HAR), mainly transport-wise (transport mode detection), has been gaining interest since 2000. It allows us to better plan our cities, and new approaches have been made possible with the widespread use of smartphones carrying several different sensors. As a matter of fact, in most developed countries, smartphone penetration exceeds 80%. The automatic transport mode detection (TMD), when effectively exploited, possibly using some kind of machine learning algorithm, provides more accurate data than traditional data collection methods, e.g. paper-based surveys.
This data is valuable to several stakeholders: i) architects and urban planners when designing cities or roads, ii) public transportation systems (e.g., as an automatic way for issuing tickets for the travelers, particularly when they are using public transport means such as train, bus, subway, etc.), iii) mobile users with a need to navigate, iv) healthcare (e.g., it is a useful way of detecting abnormal activities of patients with Alzheimer, dementia or any other mental pathologies, and v) entertainment, and more (e.g., a football match, a national festival or a bad weather condition may change the regular public transportation demands in a particular period of time). In addition, the information obtained by TMD systems is essential for providing mobile users with various value-added services, without tracking the user, for location-privacy. This proposal aims at solving the challenge of location-privacy by developing a) a system that can perform TMD with the capacity of generalization (not significantly affected by the geographical location, user variation, smartphone type, or smartphone position, e.g., in a bag or pocket), without tracking the user for location-privacy.
Software lies at the core of all IT-systems. The Programming Section, in which the candidate should be integrated, performs research and teaching on how to develop high quality software that benefits society and that is useful for both individuals and organizations.

We are offering one PhD position with specialisation in either comparative politics, or political data science. The successful applicant(s) will be part of the research project “Authoritarian Threats to Scientific Knowledge” (AutoKnow), which is funded by the European Research Council. The PhD fellowship period is three years and devoted to carrying out research and pursuing a PhD in the context of the AutoKnow project. The position may also include other career-enhancing activities: depending on the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended up to four years for qualification work consisting of e.g. teaching duties.
The primary aims of AutoKnow are to investigate how the production of scientific knowledge is affected by authoritarian regimes and politics. The project will look at how authoritarian rule affects the contents and research trajectories of scientific fields, and which fields are targeted for repression and co-optation by authoritarian rulers and movements. It will use computational text analysis to measure content-dimensions of published science and collect different data on attacks on academic freedom. It will study how authoritarian rule affects scientific progress, topic choice, political bias, idea novelty and other dimensions.
It will answer questions such as:
- Which academic fields and institutions are repressed and which are supported by authoritarian leaders?
- How does authoritarian rule shape the contents and political profile of academic work in different fields?
- What is the impact of authoritarian rule on scientific progress?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellowship for the project “Truth, Information, Democracy and Law”
A position as a PhD Research Fellow (SKO 1017) is available as part of the project Truth, Information, Democracy and Law – Department of Private Law (TIDAL) funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and Norid AS.
The fellow will be responsible for their own PhD research and work closely with the TIDAL team at the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law, Department of Private Law, UiO (NRCCL)
The project runs from April 2026 until March 2030. In addition to researchers at the NRCCL, the project team includes researchers at Queen Mary University of London, University of Bergen, University of Tromsø, Lund University, Bond University, BI Norwegian Business School, and Boston University. At the NRCCL, the core project team comprises four people, including the PhD Research fellow. The project is led by Professor Lee A. Bygrave.
The appointment period is for three years dedicated to research training, or four years with career-enhancing work making up 25% of the total workload.
A four-year fellowship requires that the appointee can contribute to the Faculty of Law’s current teaching needs.

The PhD fellowship period is three years and devoted to carrying out research and pursuing a PhD in the context of the WOW project. The position may also include other career-enhancing activities: depending on the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended up to four years for qualification work consisting of e.g. teaching duties.
The primary aims of WOW are to investigate how the organization of warring parties influences the conduct of war, and conversely, how the fighting impacts the organizational structure of the belligerents. WOW will theorize, identify, classify, and code the characteristics of state military organizations and non-state armed groups and collect data relating to the dynamics of warfare. We will answer questions such as:
- How are wars fought?
- How does the organization of a belligerent party affect the way they wage war?
- How do the dynamics of the war affect the organization of the fighting parties?

We are offering one PhD position in comparative political behaviour with a focus on gender gaps in political-democratic orientations. The successful applicant will participate in the research project Struggling Women and Men: Political-Democratic Gender Gaps in a High-Trust Welfare State (STRUGGLE), funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The PhD fellowship period is three years and devoted to carrying out research and pursuing a PhD in the context of the STRUGGLE project. The position may also include other career-enhancing activities: depending on the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended up to four years for qualification work consisting of e.g. teaching duties.
The STRUGGLE project, which involves several senior scholars at UiO and beyond, breaks new ground by analyzing the impact of gendered (male as well as female) life experiences and grievances across the life course. These are related to domains such as education, work, family, physical and mental health, and public policy experiences. How do gendered life experiences in these domains generate political-democratic gender gaps, seen for example in political trust, welfare state legitimacy, political participation, and voting behaviour? How do different gendered grievances interact across the life course? The project has a focus on Norway/Scandinavia in a broader European comparative perspective.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellows in Human Geography
We seek candidates with the potential to contribute to the development of human geography as a discipline at the department. The fellows are expected to pursue independent research under supervision, as outlined in their submitted project proposals. We value the contribution of young scholars to the academic environment and study programmes at the department and encourage candidates with a desire to participate actively in departmental life to apply.
Applicants should have research interests that resonate with ongoing research at the department. We currently have strong research communities in the fields of urban studies, sustainable transformations, work, organisations and politics, social inequality, migration, integration and diversity, cultural and political participation, population dynamics. Human geographers are also engaged in economic and political geography. The call is not thematically limited to these topics, but preference can be given to candidates with projects that align with the department’s supervisory capacity. The University of Oslo, until 1939 named the Royal Frederick University is the oldest university in Norway, located in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. Until 1 January 2016 it was the largest Norwegian institution of higher education in terms of size, now surpassed only by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
