(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc researcher: Governing offshore aquaculture innovation in the North Sea
The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a Postdoc researcher to manage and conduct research through the NWO funded project ‘Regional innovation for circular low trophic aquaculture production in the Dutch North Sea’ (CircAqua). You will specifically be responsible for conducting independent research that will lead to the development of Blue Food Vision and Strategy for nature inclusive circular low trophic aquaculture. CircAqua is an interdisciplinary project that brings together social and natural sciences to explore innovation pathways for low trophic mussel and seaweed aquaculture to deliver circular food and nature-positive impacts on the marine environment. This involves the design and organisation of mussel and seaweed farms, enabling them to develop within the social and environmental carrying capacity of coastal and offshore areas on the North Sea. The Blue Food Vision and Strategy is central to the project, providing a basis to discuss different innovation scenarios and the strategies needed to realize them. This vision will be developed with project partners from the mussel and seaweed industries, as well as those representing policy and regulation, finance and assurance. The postdoc will be responsible for developing the Blue Food Vision and Strategy to enable the mussel and seaweed sectors to innovate their production technologies and farm organisation, facilitating scaling up of nature-positive circular production.
Postdoc summary/title: Senior Postdoc computational biology and digital twins in industrial biotechnology
The Biomanufacturing and Digital Twins Research Theme of the Bioprocess Engineering chair group is hiring a Postdoctoral researcher (2 years, full time-time employment with a possible extension) to become part of the European-funded research programmes BIOS and Bioindustry 4.0. Both projects aim at the deep digitalization and automation of Industrial Biotechnology in our way towards smart biomanufacturing through data fabric, digital twins for bioprocess design, strain discovery tools and decision support systems, advanced process analytical technology devices, and digital twins for bioprocess control. As a Postdoctoral researcher, you will assist in leading the computational team of the aforementioned projects by contributing to the supervision of PhD candidates and providing high-level research to a number of objectives.
You will have the opportunity to design and lead research on improving eDNA sequence data acquisition and analysis at MAE, both in the lab as well as in real time in the field. You will implement and improve existing data processing pipelines and/or develop novel algorithms for the sequence data acquisition and analysis. Supervision and assistance of PhD- and MSc-students is also an important part of your work. To further improve efficient biodiversity assessment based on eDNA, a part of the work will entail expanding reference databases with complete genome data, focussing on fish and benthos species. You will participate in the generation of these genomic datasets, assembly genomes and create an analysis pipeline that can be used to rapidly compare real time sequence data to this large and expanding whole genome reference database. Further, there are opportunities to work on the development of the eDNA sampling and in field sequencing hardware, which is currently being developed in the context of the Next Level Animal Science investment program of the Animal Sciences group at Wageningen university https://www.wur.nl/en/project/fish-sensing-box.htm.
