PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, PAIN

The Doctoral Researcher will be employed for 42 months to complete PhD studies in the Doctoral Programme in History and Cultural Heritage. The position is associated with an Academy of Finland -financed research project that investigates the long-term history of embodied experiences of pain in the British Atlantic world during the period ca.1600–1900 (PI Dr Soile Ylivuori). For more details on the project, see the project website. The Doctoral Researcher will be a member of a four-person project team. The candidate will be working independently on a topic within the project’s scope, focusing on late nineteenth- and/or early twentieth-century Britain or USA, depending on their research interests. Their research will examine sensory and/or emotional experiences of pain in some form, with a preference on under-represented groups’ histories (e.g. women, ethnic/religious/LGBTQI+ minorities, children). Typically, the research would involve examining both archival and printed sources, tracing experiences of pain in a variety of autobiographical sources (e.g. letters, journals, memoirs).

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, ELBOW

The Doctoral Researcher will be employed for 48 months to complete PhD studies in the Doctoral Programme in History and Cultural Heritage. The position is associated with the European Research Council-funded research project Medical Electricity, Embodied Experiences, and Knowledge Construction in Europe and the Atlantic World, c.1740–1840 (ELBOW). Lead by Dr Soile Ylivuori, ELBOW uses medical electricity as a case study to investigate how patients’ embodied and experiential knowledge influenced the construction of scientific knowledge. For more details on the project, see the project website. The Doctoral Researcher will be a member of a four-person project team. The candidate will be charting and comparing eighteenth-century electro-medical practices and treatments given in Paris and Berlin, and potentially also in London and New England. As part of their PhD research, the Doctoral Researcher will also help build and contribute to an open access database of who received electro-medical treatments, when, where, and how. Typically, the research will involve examining both archival and printed sources on medical electricity in French, German, and English.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher, The Optics of Photosynthesis Lab

REDEYE aims at developing measurement protocols (combining gas-exchange, spectral reflectance and chlorophyll fluorescence) for the quantitative estimation of the photosynthetic energy partitioning in leaves and under natural field conditions. These protocols will be deployed in the field using an innovative autonomous system and the resulting data used to improve and adapt a process-based modelling framework for the light-carbon reactions of photosynthesis. Together with team members, the doctoral researcher will contribute to the development of these protocols and their subsequent long-term implementation in the field. The position includes lab experimentation, long-term field work at our highly instrumented SMEAR-II Station in Southern Finland (link), and modelling activities for the assimilation of long-term chlorophyll fluorescence and reflectance data into a process-based model. The modelling component will be done in collaboration with Dr. Jen Johnsson (Carnegie Science, US), Prof. Lianhong Gu (Oak Ridge National Lab, US), and Dr. Shari van Wittenberghe (Uni. Valencia, ESP), and it includes a stay in the US. The candidate will also have the opportunity to interact and network with a wide range of national and international collaborators to supporting the project.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researchers, computational materials physics

Position #1: The doctoral thesis work will be part of an Academy of Finland funded research project ”GoFIB”, which is a joint project between the University of Helsinki, the University of Oslo and Forschungszentrum Dresden Rossendorf. The project is dealing with simulations of ion irradiation-induced phase transition in Ga2O3 that is an ultra-wide bandgap material with superior electronic properties and high radiation resistance. The main objective of the project is to establish in collaboration with the experimental partners the fabrication technology of single-phase polymorph coatings, buried layers, multilayers, and on-demand shaped nanostructures, employing state-of-the-art highly focused ion irradiation.  The main supervisor will be Prof. Flyura Djurabekova.

Position #2. The position is for modelling the interactions between energetic particles produced in a fusion plasma with the reactor wall materials. Sputtering and the mechanisms leading to sputtering under diffent conditions will be investigated. Development of new repulsive and machine learning interatomic potentials to better describe the systems, will be a part of this work. This project is closely related to various fusion activities in Europe, mainly under the EUROfusion collaboration. The main supervisor will be Dr. Fredric Granberg.

Position #3. The doctoral researcher for time-resolved modeling of radiation damage in silicon. This project will contribute to development of new ion-irradiation strategies for highly controllable design of defective states in silicon paving the path towards manufacturing room-temperature qubits for quantum technologies. The main supervisor will be Prof. Flyura Djurabekova.

Deadline : September 25th, 2022.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
