PhD position summary/title: Docto
The research activities of the candidate will focus on the theoretical and computational analysis of lattice structures such as origami fold core sandwich structures within the theories of elasticity, elasto-plasticity and elasto-plastic damage. Research activities will involve numerical methods relying on physics-based continuum models and validated via experiments. The applicability of data-based (but physics-informed) machine learning methods will form a branch of the study.
The teaching assistant duties of the position are limited to about ten percent of working hours and related to the Master’s Programme in Building Technology, such courses as Engineering Computation and Simulation, Finite Element Methods in Civil Engineering, Mechanics of Beam and Frame Structures, Mechanics of Plate and Shell Structures, Stability of Structures or Material Modeling in Civil Engineering. Possibilities for serving as an instructor for Bachelor’s and Master’s Thesis students are available as well.
The wage of the position will be paid according to the salary scheme of Aalto University School of Engineering: the monthly pre-tax salary increases during the study years according to one’s progress in research and studies from about 2700 to about 3400 euros

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Converter-Dominated Power Transmission Systems
We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher/PhD student for a project investigating the stability of converter-dominated power transmission systems. You will assess how the dynamics, stability and characteristics of a wide power transmission system change when large amounts of IBRs, such as wind and solar power and batteries are integrated into the system. You will especially focus on small-signal analysis of converter-driven stability. Various issues related to converter-driven stability have been observed recently in real power transmission systems and they may risk the stability of the system in some cases. Your main tools will be PSCAD simulation software, MATLAB and possibly PSS/E and we value previous experience in power system simulations and analysis.
The work will be done in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Aalto University, in collaboration with Fingrid (Finnish Transmission System Operator). In the project, you can develop your skills in modeling, simulation and analysis of power systems and become an expert of converter-dominated power systems.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher, Characterization of wood nanostructure with X-ray scattering and machine learning
A detailed picture of the structure of wood cell walls is highly desired to accelerate the development of new, sustainable applications from this abundant renewable raw material. We are currently developing machine learning based methods to analyze and interpret large quantities of X-ray scattering data from wood. These methods would enable extracting new information on the hierarchical structure of wood, including its variation in nature and due to different processes.
We are searching for a doctoral researcher to work in the NNxWOOD (2021-2026) and WoodCensus (2024-2026) projects funded by the Research Council of Finland. Both of these ongoing projects develop and utilize machine learning based approaches for automatizing the analysis of X-ray scattering data from wood samples. The WoodCensus project is a collaboration between Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, involving also international partners.
Your role is to utilize machine learning based tools to analyze large quantities of X-ray scattering (small/wide-angle X-ray scattering, SAXS, WAXS) data from wood samples and interpret them in the context of wood nanostructure. You may also participate in scattering experiments using laboratory X-ray sources and state-of-the-art synchrotron facilities (e.g., MAX IV) or contribute to further development of the machine learning based data analysis methods. The work involves scientific programming and eventually working in a high-performance computing environment. The position is based at the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems of Aalto University/School of Chemical Engineering (Otaniemi Campus, Espoo, Finland), in the Biobased Materials Structure research group led by Academy Research Fellow, Dr. Paavo Penttilä. The inspiring and international research environment offers high-quality infrastructure, and the work is supported by national and international collaborators and the FinnCERES Flagship Programme of the Research Council of Finland.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Transformation of Urban Mobility Systems
The Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering research group is seeking highly motivated and creative doctoral researchers who would undertake research in Transformation of Urban Mobility Systems. Mobility is interpreted here as socio-techno-ecological phenomenon, broader than concepts such as traffic or transport. The doctoral research topic is not fixed in advance but is rather open to framing based on the applicant’s motivation. Special emphasis is placed on research that will be path-breaking by deviating from the current mainstream transport engineering paradigm. Thus, applicants are strongly encouraged to not submit proposals on conventional topics such as traffic safety, traffic management, or traditional discrete choice modeling. In contrast, the applicants are strongly encouraged to cross at least one disciplinary boundary and base their thinking in concepts from other disciplines than traditional transport engineering. Candidates will be evaluated highly if they show capability for critical problem framing and analysis, hand in hand with the creative and solution-oriented thinking.
Some example of the potential research topics, but not limited to and not in order of importance, include: development of speculative foresight methods based on solar punk imaginaries, development of system dynamics models for more-than-human impact assessment, historical analysis of unconscious norms in mobility cultures, moral assessment of technological policy, analysis of governance-planning cultures across governance levels, analysis of the influence of media or art on mobility discourses, analysis of non-violent civil disobedience movements, analysis of education needs for the next generation planners, development of education materials for current professionals, etc.
