We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with a strong experimental background in Solid State Physics, Surface Science or Physical Chemistry to take up a challenging PhD position in the area of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry. A solid background in Surface Science and previous experience using scanning probe methods or other ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis equipment would be significant benefits. PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in the fields of Biomechanics and Bioinspiration (a)

You will investigate structure-property relationships and the fracture behavior of lamellar bone at the microscale. In collaboration with clinical and academic partners from the MSCA doctoral network, you will assess whether systematic changes in the fracture behavior of bone can be identified as a function of pathology by assessing composition, structure, and properties of patient biopsies. Finally, in this interdisciplinary project at the interface of biomedical engineering, nanofabrication, and materials science, you will design, synthesize, and characterize nanocomposites and architectured metamaterials inspired by the hierarchical structure of bone for tissue engineering applications. You will be enrolled in the doctoral program in Materials Science (EDMX) at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) under the supervision of Prof. Johann Michler and Dr. Jakob Schwiedrzik. During the course of the project, you will work in a multidisciplinary team and use state of the art methods such as nanoindentation, Raman spectroscopy, 2 photon lithography, electron microscopy, and numerical simulations. Your research will contribute to understanding the effect of disease on the composition and multiscale fracture properties of bone and their impact on individual fracture risk as well as to developing novel hybrid materials with improved toughness for biomedical applications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Edge data centre’s thermal energy management systems considering multi-vector interactions (a)

In the framework of Horizon Europe Heatwise project, we are looking for a motivated and experienced PhD candidate to design and assess edge data centre’s thermal energy management systems considering multi-vector interactions in tertiary buildings. A particular focus lies on the modelling and optimization of edge data centers, multi-energy systems of tertiary buildings, thermal management systems and the characterization and assessment of different cooling technology options. Emphasis will be also placed on the temperature levels that the edge data centers’ cooling system can provide and how these temperature levels can influence the waste heat stream integration into tertiary buildings. Challenges encompass – among others – edge data centres and cooling technologies modelling, multi-energy system design and integration. Historical data in the Empa’s NEST demonstrator and its multi-energy backbone will be utilized to design and test the thermal energy management systems. The candidate shall translate his/her research ideas to tackle these challenges, in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and external scientific and industry partners. The candidate will support our master students, publish in scientific journals, and participate in conferences.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of next level OLEDs (a)

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that emit in the visible are a proven technology. In contrast, OLEDs that emit in the near-infrared (NIR) range have remained a fundamental scientific challenge. The reason for this is that the photoluminescence quantum yield of organic dyes decreases exponentially as the emission shifts to longer wavelengths – the so-called energy gap law. In this project, we aim to circumvent the emission limitations of NIR dyes by employing a fine-tuned plasmonic enhancement strategy. The project takes place in a highly interdisciplinary environment and involves partner laboratories dedicated to chemical synthesis and theoretical calculations. The potential impact of high-performing NIR-OLEDs is huge, with untapped next generation applications in through-space optical communications, machine vision or medical imaging.
