PhD position summary/title: PhD Position
The PhD project aims to close this knowledge gap by studying the influence of changes in FF properties on the regeneration success of important tree species in temperate mixed European beech forests. Specifically, the combined influence of climate change and FF changes on the regeneration success of three target species, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies, Acer pseudoplatanus will be addressed. In addition to the direct influence of these two factors, indirect influences through changes in the availability of nutrients and water or mycorrhization, changes in biotic factors such as fungal pathogens and seed predation, and changes in the competition among tree species as well as between seedlings and other understorey vegetation will be analyzed. One main task of this PhD project is to assess germination rates, mortality, growth, competitive status as well as mycorrhization and nutrition of seedlings in an experimental approach in the field. Additionally, in a greenhouse experiment the germination and initial establishment process will be assessed under controlled conditions.

The Research Training Group ConFoBi offers an inter- and transdisciplinary biodiversity research and qualification program, which draws its novelty from the combination of multi-scale ecological studies on forest biodiversity with social and economic studies of biodiversity conservation. A strong interest in interdisciplinary research and the willingness to engage in scientific exchange with other disciplines is essential. Each doctoral researcher will develop her/his project in close cooperation with her/his supervisors and the ConFoBi coordination team, and is expected to contribute to the final synthesis process of ConFoBi’s research program through developing at least one joint interdisciplinary research paper as part of her/his doctoral thesis.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Integrative Membrane Protein Structural Biology (m/f/d)
Two PhD positions are open to study the assembly and biogenesis of membrane protein complexes with crucial roles in the aerobic energy metabolism. The projects are part of the Collaborative Research Center 1381 (SFB 1381) – Dynamic Organization of Cellular Protein Machineries: From Biogenesis and Modular Assembly to Function. We are located at the University of Freiburg (Germany) and are offering a dedicated research environment with state of the art equipment for membrane protein research. The group is member of the excellence cluster CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling studies. We are seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals with a keen interest in molecular biomedical research. Cellular respiration is essential for life. It is accomplished by a sophisticated machinery of membrane-bound, multi-protein and cofactor-bearing respiratory complexes that can form higher-order structures called supercomplexes. The assembly of these machineries must take place in a tightly regulated and dynamic manner to meet changing energetic demands of the cell. Gene defects that impair the assembly are often linked to diseases. The projects aim to provide in-depth structural and mechanistic insights into the coordinated and regulated assembly and biogenesis with a focus on mitochondrial complex III and its related supercomplexes. We will address fundamental open questions with a broad spectrum of genetic, biochemical and biophysical methods including X‐ray crystallography and cryogenic electron microscopy (recent work e.g. on cryo-EM structure Kao et al., Nature Communications 2022; on protein-protein interaction Liang et al., Faseb Journal 2020). Candidates should hold a university degree (Master or equivalent) in biochemistry, chemistry, biology or a related topic. The positions are available from now until filled.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student
In this position you will contribute to a research project awarded to Dr Jessica Werthmann funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) on the topic: “A multimodal investigation of dysfunctional body-related cognitions and attention bias as mechanisms underlying body dissatisfaction in individuals with eating disorders “. This research project is based at the department of clinical psychology and psychotherapy (Chair Prof. Tuschen-Caffier). The overall aim of the project is to empirically test hypothesized mechanisms underlying body dissatisfaction in a clinical sample within an experimental psychopathology framework. Specifically, we aim to conduct two independent studies that will test the causal role of dysfunctional body-related attention and dysfunctional body-related cognitions on body dissatisfaction in patients with eating disorders.
(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Chemically Activated Peptide Libraries (CPLs)
The aim of the project is to (i) synthesize short peptides and modified amino acids using solution and solid phase methods (ii) construct peptide libraries capable of adopting well-defined conformations from single monomers (ii) characterize these systems in terms of composition, nanoscale architecture and supramolecular interactions and (iv) investigate whether the environment (light, sound, pH-gradients) can lead to disassembly. Unravelling the pathways and mechanisms that allow the non-enzymatic formation and destruction of amide bonds will pave the way towards fabrication of peptide-based chemical systems beyond the 20 natural amino acids. This strategy will further allow us to investigate the effect of pathway on achieving selectivity and whether pre-organization of the substrates (formation of supramolecular structures) leads to functions, such as adaptation and development of mnemonic effects.

The position will be placed within the theoretical astroparticle physics group lead by Stefan Vogl and focus on dark matter. The position is available immediately; ideally the candidate will be in place by fall 2022 at the latest.
The successful candidate will receive an employment contract. Salary and benefits are based on the German public service pay scale. A master’s degree in physics or equivalent is required by the starting date.
