PhD position summary/title: REANNOUNCEMENT – PhD Position in Molecular Systems Engineering
We are looking for PhD candidates to join the TACsy (Training Alliance for Computational Systems Chemistry) Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Joint Doctoral Network. This network consists of fifteen (15) highly interlinked PhD projects, of which this particular call is for project DC 12: Pathway Design for Chemical Upgrading and Co-Factor Recycling with Cell Extracts. The application deadline is 9 November 2023. The anticipated start date is 1 January 2024, but flexibility in both directions is possible. This position lies at the interface of chemistry and biological/chemical engineering and aims to develop new computational techniques for design of multi-enzyme cascades (MECs) for applications. Upgrading of chemicals such as caffeine to more valuable products can be difficult to achieve using conventional synthetic methods. However, strategies are emerging involving MECs, and the exploitation of enzymes found in cell extracts has proved effective under certain conditions. Computational methods allow us to explore the diversity of the MEC design space in-silico prior to wet-lab implementation and will thus hugely speed up the development process of productive MECs. The project will involve the investigation of potential pathways using computational techniques at the University of Vienna and a nine month secondment at the University of Sheffield to develop microfluidics methods for process optimization with encapsulated cell extracts. You will also undergo a short secondment to the company Fluigent for training in microfluidics. We are seeking a PhD candidate that has or is expected to have a Master’s degree in chemical/biochemical engineering, computer science, chemistry or related discipline at the time of recruitment. Some knowledge of enzyme kinetics, systems chemistry/biology or mathematical biology would be beneficial. Willingness to travel and work as part of an interdisciplinary team is essential.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Bioorganic Chemistry
Methyltransferases comprise a large family of enzymes that catalyse methylation of proteins, DNA, RNA and small molecule metabolites. Due to their diverse biological roles, it is important to identify and characterise all members of the methyltransferase superfamily and their natural substrates. As a PhD student, you will work on an Independent Research Fund Denmark-funded project aimed at developing innovative chemical tools for functional understanding of human protein histidine methyltransferases. The project will focus on development of novel labeling tools, using specially designed small molecules and peptide probes. You will apply modern bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology approaches, ranging from synthesis and peptide synthesis to enzyme assays and protein labeling studies, in investigations of biologically important histidine methylation. The research in Mecinovic group applies chemical principles and techniques to understand the underlying molecular origin of fundamental biomolecular processes that play essential roles in human health and disease. The group is international, cross-disciplinary and gender-balanced.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Digital Security Behavior
The successful candidate will conduct research on consumer behavior, human-computer interaction, and digital security and be involved in the research project “Digital Security Behavior”. The research project will investigate how chatbots can be used to increase digital security behavior. While cyberattacks pose a pressing threat to an increasingly digitalized society, this project aims to investigate how chatbots, or more specifically digital security chatbots (i.e., DIGS chatbots), can be used to empower citizens to engage in digital security behaviors (e.g., choosing strong passwords, using privacy enhancing internet tools, logging out). Specifically, the PhD student is expected to provide answers to the following questions: How does citizens’ interaction with a DIGS chatbot shape their subsequent digital security behavior? What factors determine citizens’ decision to interact with a DIGS chatbot? The candidate will be responsible e.g., for data collection using qualitative and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will contribute, among others, to high-quality research.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in online prevention of depression recurrence
The focus of the position is on evaluating the effectiveness of two types of online cognitive-behavioural therapy to prevent depression recurrence and on identifying individual characteristics that act as predictors or moderators of the therapies’ efficacy. Specifically, the candidate will seek to determine if socio-demographic (e.g., age, gender) and/or clinical (e.g., concentration difficulties) increase or decrease the prevention power of the online cognitive-behavioural therapies. The position starts on the 15th of January 2024 for a three-year employment of 37 weekly hours. We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with an interest in the area of clinical psychology, depression prevention, and quantitative methods. Interest in and experience with interacting with people in a professional capacity (e.g., through an internship) are also required for this position, as the successful candidate will be expected to recruit and interview people with a history of depression. Excellent communication skills and proficiency in Danish are thus essential for the position. Experience with recruitment of participants for research purposes is an asset, but not a prerequisite for the position. The PhD position is nested within the larger research project on online solutions for preventing depression recurrence funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The successful candidate will join a research group with an expertise in clinical psychology, neuroscience, mathematical modelling and statistics, led by Associate Professor Maria Semkovska in a collaboration between the Department of Psychology and the Department of Public Health. The primary place of work will be the Psychology Department, University of Southern Denmark, Odense.
