Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PHD AND POSTDOC POSITIONS AT VUSEC

VUSec performs world-leading research in the broad area of systems security. We work on attacks, defenses, reverse engineering, and formal verification of security. We cover all major areas where security is important, especially software security, hardware security, and network security. We love to work on low-level stuff, for example tinkering with operating systems and compilers, or finding out the nitty gritty of how hardware is implemented to determine whether it is vulnerable.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC BIOINFORMATICS

The Complex Trait Genetics lab (www.ctglab.nl) at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research in Amsterdam (see www.cncr.nl) is seeking applicants for a Postdoc Position in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology. The successful candidate will be part of the EU funded ERC Advanced Grant ‘From GWAS to Function (GWAS2FUNC)’, and will focus on maintaining and extending an existing web-based tool (FUMA) and developing novel statistical genetic tools. Maintaining the FUMA tool includes server management, code troubleshooting as well as some user support. Extending the tool will focus on integrating novel bioinformatic resources (e.g. expected scRNAseq data from the Allen Brain Institute, or BRAINSCAPES) with results from genetic discoveries. This integration can be part of the existing tool FUMA (https://fuma.ctglab.nl) developed by our lab, but can also comprise developing novel tools. The candidate will work in an enthusiastic team of PhD students and postdocs, with diverse backgrounds, including statistics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, psychology and stem cell biology.

Deadline : March 31, 2022.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POST-DOC POSITION IN OPTICAL BIOSENSORS FOR EARLY-DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER (COMB-O)

Every sixth death in the world is due to cancer and its incidence rate is rapidly growing. Early-stage cancer detection is critical for an optimal clinical outcome of many rapidly progressing malignant cancers, such as lung cancer, which is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths, worldwide. Screening for these cancers in high-risk individuals can save lives; however, existing methods have major limitations. As a promising alternative, optical biosensors can detect clinically relevant biomarkers associated with certain types of cancers in bodily fluids such as blood and urine without being dependent on any type of label to meet the sensitivity requirements of early-stage cancer detection. In this project, we will develop a groundbreaking monolithic integrated photonics technology, which enables the integration of light sources, detectors and sensing elements into one single chip: COMB-O. By this full integration, alignment is no longer required, overcoming the main barrier of wide deployment of optical biosensors. In addition to the integration approach, we will advance the field by incorporating a novel optical frequency comb (OFC) as the light source, which has a very low noise level enabling high sensitivity and specificity, thereby going well beyond the state-of-the-art. The development of these biosensors will provide a low-cost and minimally invasive tool with very high sensitivity and specificity, showing great potential for routine cancer diagnostics and screening.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
