(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoc Artificial Intelligence enabled anticipation of vector-borne disease outbreaks

The chair group of Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management, in collaboration with Quantitative Veterinary Epidemiology, Biometris, and the Wageningen Data Competence Center, invites applications from talented and enthusiastic scientists for a postdoc position (11-months fulltime) focusing on the development of automated early warning signals of disease outbreaks. Your main task is to develop and test innovative machine learning algorithms to enhance the anticipation of epidemiological critical transitions. You will be working with multivariate time series data derived from models representing diverse vector-borne diseases, complemented by real-world disease monitoring data. The machine learning approach will expand upon initial efforts, incorporating image-based representations of time series in conjunction with transfer learning techniques to devise highly effective classification systems. We are aware that this position is short-term and has a tight starting date. However, we are enthusiastic about advancing our work in machine learning alongside resilience indicators and early warning systems, and look forward to exploring future opportunities for continued projects collaboratively.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc assessing the hazards of nano and micro plastics for humans

As an experienced Postdoc you will work jointly at the Toxicology group of Wageningen University, Wageningen Food Safety Research and the GUMI lab of The Swammerdam Institute of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) within a Dutch research consortium on the human health risks of nano and microplastics. The research in the Toxicology group focusses on molecular-driven, mechanistic understanding of toxicological processes related to human health and their translation into risk assessment for human health. Currently micro and nanoplastics are found in the environment and the food we eat, but does this pose a human health risk? Clearly, there is a strong societal concern on the wide occurrence of micro and nano plastics. In this project you will study the potential effects of micro and nanoplastics on the human intestine (in vitro). For this you will use an organ on chip device that allows the dynamic anaerobic culturing of intestinal microorganisms on a cell layer of intestinal epithelial cells. You will use analytical chemistry based proteomics approaches to assess the biocorona formed on the particles and related that to potential adverse effects to intestinal cells. You will be involved in supervision of PhD and MSc thesis students who work in our research teams.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc researcher: Governance of active and passive deep-sea restoration activities

The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a Postdoc researcher to manage and conduct research through the Horizon Europe REDRESS project ‘Restoration of Deep-sea habitats to Rebuild European Seas’. You will specifically be responsible for conducting independent research that will identify the enabling and constraining conditions to develop deep-sea restoration policies (based on the analysis of different (active and passive) deep-sea restoration cases (cold-water corals, deep water sponges) in different European seas, to enhance institutional capacity building of actors involved in deep-sea restoration activities and to map deep-sea restoration industries in a socio-economic and governance perspective.

REDRESS is an Horizon Europe project aiming to provide a key contribution to the EU commitments towards restoring degraded ecosystems, especially in the deep sea. REDRESS brings together a large inter- and multi-disciplinary consortium of 27 partners with skills in marine restoration ecology, marine biology, marine spatial planning, modelling, computer and data science, marine technologies, economy, governance, socio-economics and human sciences with special attention on knowledge transfer, dissemination and communication.
