Laboratories, Switzerland
Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology invites online Application for various Fully Funded PhD Position. Eligible candidate may Apply as soon as possible.
(01) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: cellulose biohybrid materials.
This project bridges our activities in the fields of nanocelluloses and applied fungal biotechnology. The goal of the project is to investigate, at a fundamental level, the mode of interaction of nanocelluloses and fungal protein aggregates and use this knowledge to tune their mutual co-assembly. We envision that the generated knowledge will lead to the discovery of novel functional material formulations (e.g. films, functionalized aerogels, foams and emulsions) that could have biomedical (e.g. antimicrobial coatings, drug delivery) or food science applications (e.g. stable foams/emulsions).
Deadline of PhD Position: April 30, 2021.
(02) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: large scale excimer laser materials processing.
The PhD project focuses on the fundamental study of Excimer laser grey level direct mask projection ablation, limitations in homogeneity and stitching challenges and the development of applications thereof. The main aim of the project is the realization of future high speed – high resolution gravure printing structures. The research work consists of comparisons of different kinds of grey level mask designs and testing these by direct ablation, creation of micron sized and sub-micron surface topologies and their influence on wetting and tribological properties of the final replicated metal structures. Specific topics to be considered are debris management by gas dynamical improvement of inert and or reactive gas guidance, by simulation, real-time observation and realization.
Deadline of PhD Position: Open Until Filled
(03) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: human breath analysis by mid-IR laser spectroscopy.
This PhD project involves the development of a high-precision, mid-IR laser spectrometer for the detection of specific trace-compounds in human breath. The primary scientific aim is the selective and sensitive detection of gaseous organic molecules that are relevant in medical applications. This work is part of the “Zürich Exhalomics” flagship project, and the successful candidate will be enrolled at ETH Zurich, co-supervised by Prof. Dr. R. Zenobi. The PhD student will thus benefit from a broad expertise in trace gas detection, and breath research

(04) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: “High Resolution Gravure Printing” for Printed Electronics.
The success of Printed Electronics depends largely on the ability to print functional materials, with high resolution and at high speeds. To tackle this challenge, novel inks need to be developed, and the interplay of ink, cylinder design and process parameters needs to be understood and optimized. Goal of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of gravure printing as a manufacturing technology for printed electronics. We will address this task in a collaborative effort with partner research groups at Empa Thun, EPFL, ETHZ, and two companies. Funding for the project is received from the Strategic Focus Area Advanced Manufacturing of the ETH Board (the strategic management body of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and four research institutes) and is granted for a period of four years.
Deadline of PhD Position: Open Until Filled
(05) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: Bacteria and Materials interactions.
he scope of the position is to investigate the efficacy and applicability of probiotics to treat biofilm-associated wound infections. The goal here isto define and establish formulations containing probiotics that optimally support wound healing and possess a long-term stability. The work will contribute to a fundamental understanding of the correlation between the formulated material properties and the bioactivity of the encapsulated probiotics. The tasks include selection of suitable probiotic strains, identification of carrier materials and their fabrication strategies, and assessment of bioactivity and stability of the encapsulated probiotics.
Deadline of PhD Position: Open Until Filled
(06) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: High Energy Laser Desorption Ionization for Chemical Imaging (HELDI).
Innovation in materials science is largely impacted by new abilities to characterize functional samples with the required detail and desirable simplicity. Spatially resolved microanalysis with lasers provides chemical information as a function of sample spot location, to probe micro-defects as well as the homogeneity in 3D. Time-resolved spectroscopy, as based on the spectral information probed with short laser pulses, permits operando characterization in snapshots. An ionization laser pulse and few nanoseconds in duration may thus directly map a material with unprecedented resolution, and permit a nano-scale, operando “chemical image” of any functional material.

(07) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: Atomistic simulations of low-dimensional magnetic carbon nanomaterials.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong theoretical background in Solid State Physics or Physical Chemistry to take up a challenging PhD position in the area of low-dimensional magnetic carbon-based nanomaterials. In this PhD project, ab initio simulation techniques based on density functional theory and quantum chemistry methods as well as methods based on model Hamiltonians will be employed to predict the electronic and magnetic properties of nanographenes and nanographene-based spin chains and lattices produced in our laboratory, and to rationalize the results of scanning probe experiments related to them.
Deadline of PhD Position: Open Until Filled
(08) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: Polymer chemistry.
The PhD student is funded as part of the ERC Consolidator H2020 program. He/she will contribute to the project “Synthesis of polymers with increased dielectric permittivity”.
Deadline of PhD Position: Open Until Filled
About Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology
The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa, German acronym for Eidgenössische Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt) is an interdisciplinary Swiss research institute for applied materials sciences and technology. As part of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain, it is an institution of the Swiss federation. For most of the period since its foundation in 1880, it concentrated on classical materials testing. Since the late 1980s it has developed into a modern research and development institute.
