PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher Position in the HUMAIN Project
As LLMs become increasingly embedded in education, work, and everyday life, understanding their relationship to human competence is both scientifically and societally urgent. Existing benchmarks largely measure accuracy or linguistic fluency, but overlook the tacit, contextual, and ethical dimensions that define real-world expertise. HUMAIN addresses this gap by developing the online Competence Imitation Game (COMIG), a novel, experimentally validated framework that allows domain experts to interrogate and evaluate human- and LLM-generated responses through structured question-answer-evaluation conversations.
Combining computational and interpretive methods, the project will generate reproducible, cross-domain datasets of paired human–AI responses, analysed through embedding-based similarity measures, feature extraction, LLM-as-evaluator approaches, and qualitative interpretation. Domain experts are involved from the outset, helping to develop practitioner-informed metrics for imitation quality, contextual alignment, and pragmatic fit. Empirically, HUMAIN will conduct seven COMIG studies spanning everyday life, education, and work, engaging over 900 participants internationally. The project will also evaluate adaptation techniques, including prompt calibration, retrieval-augmented generation, and fine-tuning, to examine how LLMs can better align with domain-specific reasoning.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in the Anthropology of Humanitarianism
The New Humanitarian Infrastructures at the End of Aid project studies how humanitarian infrastructures are emerging, being remade or falling into ruination following the end of global commitment to international aid, exemplified by the withdrawal of USAID in 2025. The project aims to contribute to wider debates on the future of humanitarianism while working with refugees to expose and generate alternatives to contemporary humanitarianism.
Rather than treating humanitarian infrastructures as exclusively institutional systems, the project conceptualizes them as assemblages of physio-technological systems and social relations of diverse actors, material arrangements, and transnational connections. Empirically, the project focuses on Kenya but is open to research being conducted in alternative humanitarian contexts.
The project approaches these infrastructural transformations through four themes:
• State infrastructures: examines the expanding role of the state in humanitarian contexts, focusing on how state-led initiatives and programs are reshaping humanitarianism.
• Refugee-led infrastructures: explores how refugees generate alternatives to the top-down and neocolonial humanitarian system by organizing and creating infrastructures such as community-based organizations or mobilizing political movements that challenge current humanitarian operations.
• Transnational remittance infrastructures: analyzes how the financial and digital networks connecting diaspora communities across borders may serve as alternative forms of aid distribution.
• Corporate infrastructures: investigates the growing role of private-sector actors and digital systems in humanitarian governance. This includes the incorporation of financial platforms and emerging technologies such as generative AI, which are increasingly used in humanitarian prediction and resource distribution.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Machine-Learning, Statistics and Data-Centric Engineering
The successful candidate will work within the research project “Advances in generalized Bayesian inference via differential-geometric methods” funded by the Research Council of Finland under the supervision of the Academy Research Fellow Marcelo Hartmann and Research Fellow Luu Hoang Phuc Hau (Nanyang Technological University). We have been developing computational algorithms and theory grounded in notions of information geometry and Riemannian geometry to enhance Bayesian statistical inference and machine-learning related methods.
The successful deployment of statistical models and AI solutions relies heavily on the quality of underlying model assumptions and the learning algorithms they employ. The design of loss functions is therefore crucial in the process of model development to the specific tasks at hand. For instance, the Hyvärinen score matching principle has been widely applied in AI systems, particularly for tasks such as diffusion-based image generation. This project seeks to further develop and broaden the range of loss functions by incorporating concepts from differential geometry. Additionally, we leverage the theory of estimating functions to create optimal inference algorithms for the proposed loss functions based on its underlying Riemannian geometry, as well as for those previously introduced in the literature. These advancements hold significant potential for a wide range of applications, spanning scientific research and societal challenges at large.
