PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of Scanning Probe Investigation of Carbon-based Quantum Spin Systems (a)
We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with a strong experimental background in Solid State Physics, Surface Science or Physical Chemistry to take up a challenging PhD position in the area of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry. A solid background in Surface Science and previous experience using scanning probe methods or other ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis equipment would be significant benefits. Very good communication skills in English are essential.
PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Halide Perovskite Semiconductors for Large-area Flexible Optoelectronic Devices
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics is known for its innovative research in the field of thin-film photovoltaic technologies. The Laboratory holds several world records for power conversion efficiency of flexible CIGS and all-perovskite tandem solar cells. We are looking for a motivated PhD student to push research frontiers on halide perovskite semiconductors for large-area optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and photodetectors. For perovskite deposition, we will mainly focus on scalable methods such as sequential PVD/Slot-die coating.
PhD position summary/title: PhD student in the synthesis of polymeric materials
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in synthetic organic and polymer chemistry and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary field and who is open to learning new things. The PhD candidate needs to be proficient in spoken and written English and has a Master’s degree.
PhD position summary/title: PhD position for the development of next-generation high-energy-density supercapacitors
Your role involves exploring various methods to exfoliate graphene nanosheets, and formulating and optimizing slurries for fabricating supercapacitor electrodes. You will be responsible for constructing and evaluating coin and pouch cell supercapacitors, analyzing their morphology and electrochemical behaviors using advanced analytical methods. Additionally, you will gain a deeper understanding of electrode-electrolyte interactions within electrochemical energy storage systems. Your tasks also include developing appropriate synthesis setups and protocols to establish a reliable materials platform. Collaboration with engineers to assess the scalability of your processes is an essential aspect of your role. Throughout the project, you will actively work towards obtaining a PhD degree.
PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of transmission electron microscopy of rechargeable all-solid-state-batteries
We offer internationally competitive conditions, optimal experimental and computational facilities and the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment. The project will be carried out at Empa Dübendorf under the supervision of Dr. Marta D. Rossell. You will be registered as a PhD student at the ETH Zurich under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Rolf Erni. The planned project duration is four years starting March 2024 or upon agreement.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of small-scale deformation mechanism in hcp alloys
The development of light, strong, ductile and therefore easily formable hexagonal closed pack (hcp) alloys is one of the keys to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emission in aeronautic and transportation industries. Currently, their use as structural material is limited because of their lack of easy slip systems and a plasticity largely adapted by deformation twinning, associated with high residual stresses. The research project aim at investigating the nucleation and propagation mechanisms of deformation twinning in hcp alloys and the role of solute atoms in these processes. This will be done through the development of novel in situ testing experiments (high strain rate, cryo- to high temperatures) combined with advanced characterization techniques for strains, stresses and dislocation analyses at the nanoscale. This includes the development of in situ high-resolution transmission kikuchi diffraction technique (HR-TKD) in SEM, as well as the precession electron diffraction (PED) techniques in TEM.
