(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. student in Medical Radiation Physics with a focus on MR-Physics
Diffusion MRI (dMRI) measures microscopic properties in the tissue by studying random motion of water molecules. In dense tissue, diffusion is slow, while it appears to be faster in looser tissue. dMRI can therefore detect cancers that cause the tissue to be abnormally dense. Unfortunately, current dMRI methods have a poor clinical performance. This shortcoming can be remedied by performing a wider range of diffusion encoding, and thereby learning more about the tissue microstructure. For example, we aim to distinguish properties like cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume, and cell membrane permeability. Once estimated, these parameters can serve as biomarkers to improve the diagnostics and monitoring of disease.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Solid Mechanics with a focus on x-ray based experimental characteristion of the micromechanics of fibre-based materials

This PhD project will focus on the development and exploitation of advanced x-ray based experiments and data analysis methods for multi-scale characterisation of paper fibre based packaging materials and explore how these can be used to advance the material understanding and modelling approaches. The PhD position is part of a wider collaboration with Tetra Pak aiming towards increasing the understanding of the structure and deformation mechanisms in paper-based packaging materials from the fibre-scale to the board scale. The research will exploit advanced experimental techniques to probe the deformation mechanisms at different scales to separate out contributions from different structural components. In particular, we will exploit x-ray scattering and imaging, including the new ForMAX beamline at MAXIV (www.maxiv.lu.se/beamlines-accelerators/beamlines/formax/),), in combination with explicitly designed experiments to explore the multi-scale mechanics of the material.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in Automatic Control

We are now recruiting PhD students for two projects:

One project is financed by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems, and Software Program (WASP). The project topic is analysis of dynamical systems controlled by neural network controllers or model predictive controllers as well as synthesis of such controllers using optimization-based methods. The project can be steered towards the mathematical optimization methodology side, or more towards the control application side depending on student interests. The position includes participation in the WASP national graduate school and possibilities for longer international research visits abroad.

We also have funding from other sources that allow us to make more than one PhD student appointment. Among them, the European Research Council Advanced Grant project entitled “Scalable Control of Interconnected Systems” is devoted to new methodology and tools for control synthesis, learning and verification in large-scale systems, with special attention to applications in energy networks.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Medical Science

We are now recruiting a PhD student for a research project in adipocyte biology led by Senior lecturer Karin Stenkula. The research group is located at the Biomedical Centre within the Diabetes, metabolism and endocrinology section, Department of Experimental Medical Sciences, Medical Faculty, Lund University. The group conducts experimental diabetes research on adipose tissue function with particular focus on identifying mechanisms that regulate expansion and hormone sensitivity of adipose tissue. The research group has several established collaborations at Lund University as well as other national and international higher education institutions.  Here you can read more about our exciting research! Karin Stenkula – Lunds universitet

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in translational cancer research

Catharina Hagerling’s research group at the Faculty of Medicine currently focuses on adult and pediatric metastatic cancer. The overarching objective of the research is to fulfill the clinical need for prognostic biomarkers for metastatic cancer and to identify novel therapeutic target molecules that could cure patients with metastases. The core of the research is experimental models, including patient-derived xenograft models and clinical material from patients with metastatic cancer. We have well-established collaborations with national and international collaborations.

The aim of this project is to better characterize clinical metastases from the four most common adult malignancies (breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and melanoma) and pediatric neuroblastoma (accounting for ≈15% of pediatric cancer deaths).

The methods will include handling patient cohorts and databases, bioinformatics, and working at the research laboratory with various experimental methods. Preferentially the candidate should have a degree in medicine so that he/she can work with extracting data from medical records and evaluate outcome measures in patients with cancer. Laboratory work will be a large part of the project. Adequate supervision and introduction will be provided. The project is of clinical and translational character.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Sustainable energy systems

The doctoral student will work in the project VERSAM – Regional collaboration to achieve a fossil-free welfare society. The aim with the project is to enhance knowledge on how regional collaboration contributes to build capacity to achieve a fossil free society. A framework for collaboration will be developed as a tool to facilitate regional capacity building to reach a fossil free society.

The project VERSAM including in total three doctoral (one at the IIIEE, one at Linköping University and one at Halmstad University) students and is action oriented and has an interdisciplinary approach, combining three research fields: sociotechnical transition, sustainable regional development and energy system modelling. The empiric focus is on transportation, industry and housing and service in three regions.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
