PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Priming Plant-Soil Microbiota Interactions
Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme drought events. Extreme drought severely impairs plant growth, reshapes soil biogeochemical processes, and disrupts interactions between plants and soil microbiota. Thus, extreme drought events result in loss of plant and soil community diversity, functioning and stability to future disturbances.
However, mounting evidence shows that long-term exposure to drought induces priming effects that increase plant resilience to subsequent drought events, and that soil microbiota are key players in reducing plant drought stress and enhance plant recovery. The aim of this project is to uncover:
- How long-term exposure of plants to drought stress reshapes plant-soil microbiota interactions;
- How plant-soil microbiota interactions prepares plants to better overcome future drought events;
- Whether beneficial plant-soil microbiota interactions are transferred from adult plants to their offspring to enhance their success in overcoming drought events.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Neuromorphic Human-Computer Interaction at the Human Media Lab
Are you passionate about revolutionizing Human-Computer Interaction? Could you see yourself developing real-time, energy-efficient AI inspired by the human brain? And are you interested in exploring Bayesian models of human behavior for cutting-edge Neuromorphic HCI? If so, apply for this PhD position at the Human Media Lab!
Recent developments in Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise for the delivery of user experiences that fulfil the long-standing concept of the digital assistant in Apple’s 1987 Knowledge Navigator video. However, there are many outstanding issues that impede progress towards a seamless interaction with digital assistants. For one, the input of data about the user’s ongoing behaviour is not available to LLMs. This means LLMs can have difficulty reasoning about everyday user activities. Secondly, available data is not used to train the model in real-time. Thirdly, current AI does not explicitly understand the uncertainty that underlies human behaviour. This means LLMs have difficulty reasoning about the reliability of their inferences, which can lead to difficulties in real-time decision making. Finally, training LLMs is costly from both a computational and environmental perspective

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Computer Security and Privacy: Online Privacy and Digital Rights
Are you passionate about improving the digital landscape and protecting users’ rights? Do you believe that the current state of web services and apps could be more user-centric and ethically sound? Then join the Digital Security group (DiS) as a PhD Candidate!
Current consumer technology comes with many risks to the digital rights and well-being of its users: Many web services, apps and even operating systems have adopted the business model of being available to end users free of monetary charges, monetising their personal data instead; large Internet companies widely employ manipulative design to keep users’ attention and lock them into their ecosystems; and AI companies mine user-generated content from the internet with disregard for privacy or intellectual property laws. Jurisdictions across the globe try to tackle these challenges through new legislation and platform regulation such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Digital Services Act (DSA), Digital Markets Act (DMA), and AI Act, or new privacy laws in different US states, but their effects are often limited and enforcement is slow.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidates: Environmental Science, Hydrology, Socioeconomics, Toxicology or Ecology of Pollutants
Are you eager to learn how emission, fate, and effects of pollutants (and the water, material and biomass flows that carry them) are related to the size of cities, catchments, organisms, and communities? Then join the ERC Advanced Grant project “The Power of Size” at Radboud University as a PhD candidate!
The aim of ’The Power of Size’ is to obtain relationships for the emission, fate and effects of pollutants as a function of size. We intend to derive overarching scaling principles applicable to multiple disciplines, including hydrology, socioeconomics, toxicology and ecology. To this end, you will collect data from databases, reviews, articles, and reports. Subsequently, you will derive and compare statistical and mechanistic relationships. As a lead author, you will publish the outcome in scientific journals and present the main findings at conferences in international settings.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: The Conceptual History of Ethics in Modern Arabic
Are you fascinated by the history of ideas in the Arab world? By how the Arabic language developed in the modern age? By its discourse on ethics and how it has affected society? In this funded PhD position, you will research the modern history of the concept of ethics in Arabic. You will be mentored by a team of experts, gain access to university-wide, Dutch, and EU grant opportunities, and network with scholars across the globe.
The concept of ethics has played a pivotal role in modern Arabic discourse: from politicians invoking it as ’the primary deciding factor’ of national progress, to philosophers claiming it as the essence of Islamic ‘reason’, to TV shows instructing the public about ethical conduct. In this project you will study the development of the modern Arabic concept of ethics (akhlāq), investigating the history of moral terms and their use in intellectual, political, literary and other fields. Understanding this history is vital to understanding how ethics was articulated and, more broadly,
how conceptualisations and re-conceptualisations of ethics were spread and transformed through educational, religious and political discourses to lay the groundwork for different conceptions of modern subjectivity.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Biogeochemistry
The project focuses on samples that were collected around East Antarctica and Svalbard this year. These two locations contrast in terms of the impact of climate change. Where the impact of human-induced climate change around East Antarctica is limited, Svalbard is already heavily impacted. Your work will be to determine current iron and manganese dynamics at these two locations by conducting laboratory work and geochemical modelling. Additional fieldwork is expected. The ultimate goal of the project is to implement the findings in a state-of-the-art global model to determine how iron and manganese dynamics will change in the future upon continued climatic changes.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Declarative Programming and the Internet of Things
Are you an aspiring computer scientist with a fascination for declarative programming, the Internet of Things or topics that intersect with this? Then join the Software Science group at the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences as a PhD candidate!
You will contribute to research on the various aspects of orchestrating IoT systems. Topics we study are embedded domain-specific languages, declarative programming styles such as functional programming and task-oriented programming, tierless programming, green computing, and system orchestration. Furthermore, we perform quantitative and qualitative empirical research on these techniques to answer questions regarding the usability, maintainability and evolve-ability of these novel methods.
The research in the department has led to several (open-source) tools that you will use as an object of study (among others). Examples of this are: Clean, a functional programming language, iTasks, a task-oriented programming framework for distributed web applications, and mTask, a task-oriented programming language for embedded devices.
