PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, with a specialization in biochemistry

The species that compose the human gut microbiome are poorly characterized at their molecular level, despite their important roles to keep a healthy state. The presence of pathogenic species or imbalances in the composition of commensal species are associated with disease. The doctoral studies are aimed at a doctoral degree where the main task is research within our effort to understand mechanisms of drug resistance in these species, so that we will be able to utilize drugs to rationally manipulate the composition of the human microbiome community.

In your PhD studies, you will use molecular biology/biochemistry approaches to characterize drug resistance mechanisms in representative species groups of the human microbiome. This will involve using genetic manipulation, high throughput growth measurements and biochemistry approaches for protein structure and function determination (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR, cryo-electron microscopy). You will learn how to use advanced bacterial culture conditions to grow the species of the human gut microbiome in the absence of oxygen. You will also learn how to analyze large datasets.

At Umeรฅ University, you will be immersed in a strong research environment at the Department of Chemistry and the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), and have the chance to use the multiple facilities (e.g., NMR, metabolomics, protein expression, cryoEM) for a successful PhD. In addition to the research assignment, participation in postgraduate courses is also included.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, in biochemistry on the microalgal cell wall

Despite their promise as a sustainable feedstock for biotechnological applications, the use of microalgae has been hindered by high monetary and energy costs associated with the processing steps that follow cultivation, particularly the extraction of valuable compounds from the algal biomass. Microalgae are surrounded by a thick cell wall, which presents a challenge to these processes; this cell wall first must be broken, removed, or enzymatically digested. Even though knowledge of the microalgal cell wall is highly important to make algal biotechnology energetic and economic feasible, very little is known about the diverse cell walls of Chlorophyta, the green unicellular microalgae used in biotechnological applications.

Your research will focus on investigations of the biosynthesis and modification of the cell wall of Chlorophyta. Using bioinformatic tools you will identify key enzymes in the cell wall biosynthesis and identify evolutionary paths. Biochemical analyses will highlight changes in the microalgal cell wall in response to stress. You will further investigate the carbon flux in Chlorophyta to elucidate the metabolic pathway from CO2 to the cell wall and use molecular biological tools to generate algal strains with improved cell wall properties.

This project offers an exceptional opportunity to be an active member in an innovative, multidisciplinary research program at the interface of plant research, biochemistry and microalgal biotechnology.

PhD position summary/title: PhD students in Statistics

We are seeking one or two PhD students that will work within the departmentโ€™s research area โ€œstatistics to serve societyโ€ which focuses on developing statistical methods and software for the analysis of large and complex collections of data. The PhD student(s) is planned to be connected to one of the departmentโ€™s research projects. One of the current projects lead by Marie Wiberg is โ€œInnovative statistical methods for standardized achievement tests to ensure comparability and fairness of test scoresโ€, with overall aim to develop innovative statistical methods to ascertain validity and reliability of test scores over time to ensure fairness among the test takers. Another project lead by Wiberg is โ€œInnovative statistical and machine learning methods for comparing performance and outcome in register data studiesโ€, with overall aim to develop, evaluate, and implement innovative statistical methods, including modern machine learning methods, to draw inferences from register data. A third project โ€œIntegrative machine and deep learning models for predictive analysis in complex disease areasโ€œ is lead by Marie Eriksson with the aim to develop high-performance, explainable machine and deep learning models that can accurately predict severe outcomes in patients with complex diseases, such as stroke. The project is in collaboration with the Swedish stroke register and connected to health equity.

The PhD students are expected to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, including both theoretical and applied projects. The project is located at Umeรฅ University, but the appointed candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with researchers from other disciplines, as well as within international collaborations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Economics

The PhD students will be part of a research project dealing with efficiency aspects of public sector choices, such as redistributive taxation, public good provision, policy coordination (or lack thereof) across different levels of government (local, regional, and national), and externality correction. It also includes examining how to organize the provision of public services to improve economic efficiency through effective public procurement, contract design, and related questions of market regulation. The objective is to take a broad perspective on public sector tasks and procedures to improve the allocation of resources.

Specifically, the research project on which this recruitment is based comprises three interrelated research areas with the overarching aim of further developing research on economic efficiency in contexts where the public sector plays a major role. One such area refers to interactions between different levels of decision making โ€“ the national government, regional policy makers, and local policy makers. A key issue here is the inefficiencies that such interaction may generate due to lack of coordination across public sector entities and the broad implications thereof for policy design.

A second research area refers to the pros and cons of public procurement versus choice systems (e.g., where the public sector pays for elderly care but users can choose the provider). It also includes potential problems facing procuring entities such as collusion across bidders and how collusion can be prevented with market regulations.

The third area, focuses on secondary objectives often attached to public procurement by examining the possible use of procurement for achieving environmental and social objectives (in addition to achieving the primary objectives behind the procurement). Note that these specific areas are not mutually exclusive, a PhD project can be based either on a specific area or a mix between them.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student position in Medical Science

The aging brain undergoes several changes that can lead to cognitive decline and dementia. Brain changes that are of particularly importance for individual differences in cognitive aging  remain, however, currently inconclusive. This project will investigate associations between aging-related brain changes, e.g., the dopamine decline, cerebral-small vessel disease, inflammation and build-up of b-amyloid and phosphorylated tau, in relation to cognitive performance in healthy older adults.

The student will handle and analyse large amounts of data from brain imaging (MRI and PET), cognitive tests, blood-based biomarkers; and perform statistical analyses.

The appointment aims at a PhD degree and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue doctoral studies, which includes participation in research, seminars and courses.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on Compilation of Linear Algebra Expressionst

Linear algebra expressions are evaluated in an efficient and robust way by mapping them to a carefully chosen sequence of calls to optimized functions as offered by libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. The mapping is by no means unique, and different mappings differ in terms of time, space, and accuracy. When the sizes of the matrices are unknown at compile-time, as is often the case, then the problem is further complicated by the fact that no single mapping is optimal for all combinations of matrix sizes. As a consequence, any code generated (at compile-time) to evaluate the at run-time) must consist of more than just a single sequence of function calls.

We recently received a 4-year grant from the Swedish Research Council to investigate how to effectively compile linear algebra expressions when the matrix sizes are unknown at compile-time. The project aims to address the problem using e-graphs. An e-graph is a data structure commonly used in automated theorem provers and recently popularized for optimizing compilers and many other optimization tasks. We hypothesize that an e-graph would be an effective tool for discovering and encoding a large set of alternative ways of evaluating a particular expression with unspecified matrix sizes. When a concrete expression is evaluated at run-time, thus revealing the matrix sizes, an extraction algorithm can identify an optimal evaluation scheme for that particular instance of the expression from the compiled e-graph.
