(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher for our project “Impact of electroactive microorganisms on corrosion processes”

Corrosion can be defined as the deterioration of a metal due to the (electro)chemical interaction with its environment. This deterioration leads to a yearly cost estimated between 3 and 4% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and can lead to deadly accidents and ecological catastrophes. Although non-biological processes have been the focus in corrosion sciences, the large impact of living organisms has been increasingly recognized and investigated in the last decades. However, a general understanding of biocorrosion is lacking because of the numerous and entangled biophysicochemical mechanisms that can possibly intervene. This limited knowledge impedes the development of predictive models of biocorrosion as well as its prevention.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher (22304)

The Paediatric Precision Oncology Lab (PPOL) investigates neuroblastoma, a paediatric tumour arising from sympathetic nervous system progenitor cells. Given the low survival rates, there is an urgent medical need for novel insights and discoveries that can pave the way for more effective and less toxic treatment. We test novel small molecule combinations and explore the power of PROTACs for protein degradation in a preclinical setting. The PPOL lab investigates neuroblastoma, a paediatric tumour arising from sympathetic nervous system progenitor cells. In a close collaborative effort with the labs of Charlotte Scott and Steven Goossens, we apply multi-omics technologies, single-cell applications (Guilliams et al., Cell, 2022) and innovative in vitro and in vivo models to investigate responses to therapies and the role played by the murine and human tumour microenvironment including macrophages and other myeloid immune cells. As partner of the ITCC consortium and EU-Vagabond initiative, we aim to accelerate the future transition towards more potent and less toxic precision medicine from the bench to the patient.

About Ghent University, Belgium  –Official Website

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
