(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Scholar – Plant and Microbial Biology
The Hawkes Lab has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in soil microbial ecology and global change. The postdoc will work on an NSF-funded project that addresses how soils from different climate histories respond to extreme drought by leveraging a global network of rainfall manipulations. The overarching goal of the project is to improve our understanding of soil respiration responses to moisture and their representation in carbon cycling models. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to develop projects in their area of expertise. Specific responsibilities will include (1) measurements of soil respiration, soil carbon, and nutrients, and other soil properties, (2) data management and analysis, (3) coordination of sample sharing across labs, and (4) manuscript writing and presentations based on results. This is a collaborative project with Sarah Evans at Michigan State University and Steve Allison at the University of California Irvine, and the successful candidate will have opportunities to interact with students and postdocs across all three labs. The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Hawkes to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Scholar – Plant and Microbial Biology
The Hawkes Lab has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar to work on the role of the foliar microbiome in wheat resilience. The research addresses ecological and biological mechanisms underlying wheat-microbe interactions. Specific responsibilities will include: (1) field sampling of wheat from stands across NC, (2) isolation, maintenance, and characterization of microbes from wheat, (3) functional tests of the wheat microbiome in greenhouse experiments, (4) library preps for sample metagenomics and isolate genome sequencing, (5) bioinformatic and statistical analysis of data, and (6) manuscript writing and presentations based on results. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to develop projects in their area of expertise. This is a collaborative project and the postdoc will also work with the Brown-Guedira and Sozzani labs at NCSU, as well as with collaborators in Denmark and the Netherlands.
