(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in genetics and functional genomics

We are looking for a skilled postdoctoral fellow with a computational, mathematical, statistical,  and/or bioinformatic background in genetics and functional genomics at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland  FIMM, Helsinki Institute of Life Science, HiLIFE in the research groups of Professor Aarno Palotie (Research Group Palotie) and Dr. Olli Pietiläinen (Research Group Pietiläinen). The position is part of research program that aims to discover biological mechanisms in schizophrenia and related neuropsychiatric disorders. The program bridges multidisciplinary group of researchers in the interface of genetic discoveries and multi-omic molecular biology using collections from over 500 000 genotyped participants from clinical and population studies with medical data. These include the FinnGen (https://www.finngen.fi/en)  and SUPER studies (https://www.superfinland.fi/english). The Palotie group applies modern large-scale genetic analysis approaches to discover genetic mechanisms in common diseases with focus on neurological, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric traits. Palotie leads major research efforts at the University of Helsinki and The Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. The Pietiläinen group combines state-of-art functional genomics and molecular cell biology approaches to understand how genetic risk factors identified in the disorders mediate their causative effects in human cells. The Pietiläinen laboratory is based at the Neuroscience Center and has close links with the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (https://www.broadinstitute.org/stanley).

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research in Microbiome Research

The project is a comprehensive study of how resilient or eco-responsive host-microbiome interactions are to changing environments. Both biotic and abiotic factors can influence the bond between hosts and their associated microbes, and create an imbalance that may be linked to decrease in the host fitness and population dynamics in the field. The postdoc will have access to long-term data and yearly field samples to tackle related to microbiota / microbiome community change through space and time. The tasks of the postdoc will include field work, molecular work, and community analyses, and writing of manuscripts; and the details of the project will be adjusted to fit the research interests of both the PI and the postdoc.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in biogeography, macroecology, aquatic ecology

The postdoctoral researcher will work on the project BIOISLAND Biodiversity loss in freshwaters under changing environment – lessons from island diatoms (2022-2026) funded by the Academy of Finland. Our aim is to examine freshwater diatom functional and taxonomical biodiversity patterns and drivers on islands and continents and explain and predict biodiversity variation using key ecosystem characteristics such as ecosystem area, age, isolation, land use and water chemistry. We use both observational global and regional diatom data sets and conduct field campaigns and experiments at smaller spatial scales. Overall, forthcoming results will increase our understanding of how ecosystem fragmentation affects biodiversity in freshwaters. Main collaborators of the project include top researchers from France, US and China. The research project is led by Professor Janne Soininen https://blogs.helsinki.fi/jhsoinin/ and work will be done in his Aquatic Community Ecology group.

Deadline : 15.3.2023.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
