(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Super-Resolution Microscopy and Microbiology

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated postdoctoral researchers, who are interested in applying (and possibly developing) super-resolution microscopy and single-particle tracking, to join our research group for an ERC-funded project. The project involves planning and executing experimental work including state-of-the-art microscopy, genetic engineering, RNA-sequencing, data analysis, machine learning, and modelling to unravel how bacteria adapt to different temperatures. Our team will work on multiple topics at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology: intracellular spatial organization, macromolecular crowding, liquid-liquid phase separation, heat- and cold shock protein dynamics, and gene regulation. The postdoctoral researcher will have a key role in contributing ideas, analyzing and interpreting the findings, and writing up the research, in collaboration with the broader project group.

Deadline : 3.1.2023

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Postdoctoral Researchers for Regenerative Agriculture in East Africa

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher, who will be part of the international research team working on Regenerative agricultural systems for climate resilience in agroecological gradient in East Africa (REACT) project funded by Academy of Finland. REACT aims to develop new knowledge on water, soil, biodiversity, and land management to improve resource use efficiency for regenerative smallholder agricultural systems in different agroecological zones in Kenya. We develop research-based measures with local agricultural stakeholders to enhance the climate resilience of cropping systems. The project will contribute to this systemic change by identifying efficient adoptable pathways to improve plant water availability and stable soil organic carbon sequestration for improved water retention in variable conditions. This targets to ensure long term productive and resilient regenerative farming systems for maintaining food security whilst operating within current and future environmental limits under climate change.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher

You will develop computational tools for analyzing microbiome data and apply these methods for human microbiome data sets. You will work in a project investigating the initial establishment of the gut phage populations and their functions at birth and in infancy. Specific goals include investigations of mother-to-infant phage transmission and phage roles in modulating the natural history of the gut microbial communities through predation, lateral gene transfer and other functions. Method development work could involve (but is not limited to) assembly-based quantification and characterization of bacteriophages with Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing, tracking horizontal gene transfer between bacteria and bacterial communities, community gene expression analysis (metatranscriptomics) or multi-view data integration (metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metabolomic and other data). You will work in a diverse team with wetlab scientists and clinicians to answer concrete biological questions and to create solutions for future healthcare and clinical work. There are possibilities to extend this work to understand phage roles in fecal microbiome transplants and (gut) microbial ecology in general. The balance between method development, analysis of existing and new data sets, manuscript writing, and other tasks can be adjusted according to your preferences.

Deadline : 9.12.2022

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher

You will develop a laboratory protocol for purifying high-molecular-weight viral DNA (and/or RNA) from human fecal samples, and sequence these using Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing. Additionally, you may utilize Oxford Nanopore selective sequencing (real time selection of sequenced molecules) to deplete bacterial DNA. We will train you (if necessary) to bioinformatically analyze these data in collaboration with other researchers in the group. Bioinformatic analysis include, but are not limited to: 1) tracking phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer in bacteria, 2) investigating phage-bacteria interactions and their influence in microbiome population dynamics over time, 3) understanding mother-to-infant bacteriophage transfer and potential phage induction in the infant gut. There are possibilities to extend this work to understand phage roles in fecal microbiome transplants and (gut) microbial ecology in general. The balance between laboratory work, computational training and analysis and manuscript writing can be adjusted according to your preferences.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of Ecology of Plant-Microbe Interactions

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in a consortium project aiming to understand how plant biodiversity could be integrated into our food production systems to develop sustainable and climate-smart farming practices. Specifically, we are addressing questions regarding how above-ground plant diversity links with below-ground microbial diversity, and how these jointly affect plant fitness, resistance and resilience to both biotic and abiotic stress using experimental approaches. The consortium joins expertise in agriculture, plant ecology, soil microbial ecology and climate science. It is an exciting interdisciplinary effort addressing cutting edge scientific questions with direct applicability.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
