Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in RNA Biology / Virology
The Burgess group is seeking a motivated post-doctoral research fellow to investigate RNA regulation in virus:host interactions. This exciting NIH-funded project focuses on the role of cellular RNAs in infection and innate immunity using Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV-1) as a model infection. The project will combine a range of RNA approaches and established virology techniques to illuminate the importance of cellular RNA regulatory pathways to the detection and success of infection. You will be joining a young research team and a growing vibrant virology research section situated at the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill campus in Guildford, 35 minutes south of London by train. You must have, or expect to shortly obtain, a PhD in the life sciences and have relevant laboratory experience. Candidates with backgrounds in RNA biology, innate immunity or virology are encouraged to apply.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Child Development
The post-holder will be working on a 4-year ESRC-funded project with Dr Chris Askew (University of Surrey), Prof Andy Field and Dr Kathryn Lester (University of Sussex). The project is investigating risk and resilience factors in the vicarious learning and reduction of fear in children (aged 7-10). The aim of the research is to identify the combination of parenting style, parent temperament and child temperament factors that influence vicariously learned increases and reductions in fear. The research findings are expected to increase our understanding of how fear is intergenerationally transmitted within families and identify the factors that increase children’s resilience or susceptibility to fear development. The project aims to create a new evidence base that will help inform the development of future fear interventions, preventions and treatments for children by improving our understanding of the main influences on fear development and treatment responsiveness. We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated researcher interested in the development of anxiety disorders in children. The post holder will be responsible for recruitment of participants (parents and children) and the day-to-day running of the research in the lab. Duties include creating materials, programming, collecting, processing and inputting data, conducting preliminary analyses, and maintaining a project-specific website. They will need a good understanding of research methods and ethical issues in this type of research. They will also be involved in the writing-up and dissemination of findings.

About The University of Surrey, England – Official Website
The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following recommendations in the Robbins Report. The institution was previously known as Battersea College of Technology and was located in Battersea Park, London. Its roots however, go back to Battersea Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education in London, including its poorer inhabitants. The university’s research output and global partnerships have led to it being regarded as one of the UK’s leading research universities.
The university is a member of the Association of MBAs and is one of four universities in the University Global Partnership Network. It is also part of the SETsquared partnership along with the University of Bath, the University of Bristol, the University of Southampton and the University of Exeter. The university’s main campus is on Stag Hill, close to the centre of Guildford and adjacent to Guildford Cathedral. Surrey Sports Park is situated at the nearby Manor Park, the university’s secondary campus. Among British universities, the University of Surrey had the 14th highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2015.
A major centre for satellite and mobile communications research, the university is in partnership with King’s College London and the University of Dresden to develop 5G technology worldwide. It also holds a number of formal links with institutions worldwide, including the Surrey International Institute, launched in partnership with the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics. The university owns the Surrey Research Park, providing facilities for over 110 companies engaged in research. Surrey has been awarded three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for its research, with the 2014 Research Excellence Framework ranking 78% of the university’s research outputs as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. It was named as The Sunday Times University of the Year in 2016.
