PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate for Gas-phase Contamination Detection in Real-life Applications: Combining Spectroscopy and Spectrometry
Are you an enthusiastic young scientist who likes to work with and/or develop new instruments in the laboratory? And do you hold a Master’s degree in physics (photonics), engineering (electrical) or related fields? Would you like to be involved in research and development to find the best methods for detecting gas phase contaminations in novel/demanding applications such as those used in the green hydrogen and semiconductor industry? If so, then you have a part to play as a PhD candidate in our research team. Put your ideas to the test at our green campus and push your boundaries in an internationally friendly environment. Detecting gas-phase contaminations is a fundamental and ever-growing field. Safety and efficiency of many real-life applications depend on the online monitoring of gas-phase contaminants. This PhD project aims at two of these important applications: I) contaminants in the storage and transfer of green hydrogen and II) contaminants in the semiconductor manufacturing processes. The most important gas-phase contaminant in these two applications and their concentration levels will be identified and well characterised with the help of leading national and international institutes and companies in the corresponding field. This involves measuring samples from these applications using existing laboratory instruments and/or developing new instruments (laser-based spectrometers). The final goal is to identify and/or develop the most efficient and cost-effective detection method for detecting each contaminant for the particular application. We are looking for a PhD candidate who is eager to conduct this applied research.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Contingency and Meaning for Trans People and their Relatives
Are you fascinated by the human search for meaning? Are you driven to deepen our understanding of experiences of contingency? And do you wish to gain a profound insight into the existential questions of trans people and their relatives? If so, then come and join this project as a PhD Candidate! You will study the search for meaning experienced by trans people and their relatives and its impact on experienced quality of life, thereby contributing to the provision of spiritual care for this group. ‘Trans people’ is used as an umbrella term for people whose gender identity, either binary or non-binary, does not correspond with their birth-assigned gender. You will perform and analyse in-depth interviews with trans people in different stages of their transition and with their relatives, acknowledging that transitions can be non-binary, heterogeneous or even reversed. You will investigate both personal and collective aspects of trans people’s search for meaning, aiming to advance theoretical insight into the experience of contingency induced by the incongruence between one’s experienced or expressed gender and assigned gender. Based on the results of your research, you will develop recommendations for the provision of spiritual care for trans people and their relatives. In your research, you will focus especially on the role of religion and spirituality. Although conservative religious traditions tend to criticise decisions and treatments regarding trans people, Christian and Jewish liturgy and rituals have been developed to celebrate gender transitions, and prayer and Quran recitation have been sources of resilience for transgender Muslims. The search for gender identity often co-occurs with the interpretation or re-interpretation of religion and spirituality, which can become sources of meaning and support.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Computational and Developmental Biology
The early mammalian embryo, or epiblast, is composed of pluripotent cells that can generate all specialised cell types of the body. The epiblast cell population is heterogeneous, showing stochastic differences in transcriptome and epigenome between cells that affect their differentiation potential. In this project, you will address how a system composed of intrinsically stochastic epiblast cells can show robust and deterministic fate decisions, utilising single-cell genomic/epigenomic datasets from in vitro developing mouse gastruloids that will be generated within the consortium. You will apply state-of-the-art genetic/epigenetic computational approaches, integrative -omics, cellular trajectory analysis, agent-based modelling and other types of predictive modelling, supported by our in-house computational biology unit. At the Molecular Biology department, you will be part of the Stem Cell group focusing on the unique regulatory mechanisms acting in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to maintain their pluripotent state and prepare for gastrulation. PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: ‘Empowerment of Patients and Doctors Using Data and AI’ at the Donders Centre for Cognition
This PhD project is part of the Radboud Healthy Data Programme. The use of AI in health data can lead to ethical, legal and societal concerns. You will focus on how the healthy data programme can empower personalised health decisions. You will analyse the connections between empowerment and self-determination, and how AI could influence the decision making of clinicians and patients, and select suitable instruments to measure actual and perceived changes in empowerment. You will investigate how AI and the improved exchange and frequent reuse of health data could empower doctors and patients, and affect their interaction. To this end, you will analyse how empowerment can be understood as increased self-determination. The challenge is to identify how and in what ways technology can support people, instead of , for example, making them overreliant on technology. You will examine ways in which AI (e.g. as decision support system) and data technology (and education regarding their use) could increase actual and perceived self-determination in making personalised health decisions. You will investigate, select and apply instruments for measuring empowerment changes in the context of health care. On the basis of this, you will contribute to the evaluation of how the healthy data project affects actual and perceived self-determination. You will work together with other PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and PIs of the HD programme, in particular with those involved in the work package on ethical, legal and societal challenges. Overall, you will investigate how the three main aspects of the HD programme (improving the organisation of data, addressing medical needs through AI methods, and education) contribute to a meaningful (subproject 1: Concepts) and clearly operationalised increase in empowerment, as expanded, perceived and actual self-determination (subproject 2: Aims). You will provide a framework for measurement of empowerment and self-determination in a health data context (subproject 3: Evaluation). Finally, you will provide feedback and recommendations to the community on how the healthy data programme could further support empowerment (subproject 4: Outreach).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Interactive Causal Explanations for Patient-centric Personalised Health
Within our Personalised Care in Oncology (PersOn) consortium, we are looking for a talented PhD candidate to work on applying principled causal model inference to help patients make informed decisions about their preferred treatment alternatives. We will use modern explainability techniques, such as Causal Shapley values, to translate complex counterfactual predictions into patient-friendly, understandable information, allowing patients to explore the impact of different available treatments. Together with other PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers in the consortium, you will help build an integrated causal model of the target oncological domain, and use that as a basis for answering interactive `what if’ questions tailored to characteristics and preferences of individual patients. You will work with causal model experts, as well as with researchers, healthcare practitioners, and stakeholders in explainable decision support. Your contribution to the project will be both foundational, advancing the state of the art in personalised causal inference, and applied, focusing on user requirements in terms of explanation and justification to help advance shared decision making about personalised healthcare. Given the interdisciplinary challenges associated with the project, you will participate in two research groups. Your home base will be the Data Science group in the Faculty of Science at Radboud University, focusing on causal modelling and individualised counterfactual inference. In addition, for one day a week, you will be part of the Microbiology and Systems Biology research group at TNO (see below), where part of the work focuses on explainable models that bring together knowledge and data for improvement of personal health. You will also collaborate closely with PhDs from other work packages in the PersOn project, responsible for the collection/elicitation of patient preferences and modelling specific medical knowledge use cases (see related vacancy ‘Designing patient-in-the-loop personalization of cancer treatment with AI’ on the project website).
