PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computational Science and Engineering with a focus on machine learning
Machine learning is a key technique in many different areas, and machine learning accounts for many of the recent successes in artificial intelligence. One way to handle the problem with small amounts of data in high-dimensional machine learning is to use prior information—usually by prior distributions or penalties. Structured priors and penalties mean that we encode domain-specific, expert, or prior knowledge about a problem into the machine learning model. By encoding a particular structure, the model can select relevant groups of variables, reduce the risk of overfitting the training data, and improve our ability to interpret the model and understand the data.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student position in Chemistry with focus on Planetary Geochemistry and Spectroscopy
The doctoral studies are aimed at a doctoral degree where the main task is reseach within a project to resolve the formation and stability of liquid water in martian analogue soil and salt mixtures. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council. You will explore the interfacial chemistry of water/ice formed in these mixtures using vibrational spectroscopy under low and high temperature settings. Furthermore, you will bridge these analyses with remote sensing data from Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) of NASA to understand the aqueous history of Mars and revealing potential water resources for future human explorations. In addition to the research assignment, participation in postgraduate courses is also included.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on federated learning
Federated learning (FL) poses multiple challenges when applied to distributed, real-time robotic manipulation in the cloud. Multi-centric data heterogeneity observed during sensing, actuation, control and manipulation is a prime concern because data in classical FL settings is typically assumed to be independent and identically distributed (iid). In contrast, data from distributed robotic nodes operating under variations in environment, kinematics and sensing modality is not necessarily iid and raises questions concerning global model convergence for performance guarantees. This project aims to address the following challenges: (i) Developing high-quality local and global representation learning models cause multiple issues, including inconsistency of representation spaces, misalignment of representations, and incomplete representations. (ii) Achieving faster model adaptation through continual or lifelong learning, (iii) Preventing inter-nodes interference and inter-nodes knowledge transfer for irrelevant knowledge assimilation across models, (iii) Selective relearning of policies for unseen environments in cloud robotics systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student in human geography
The current doctoral project will be carried out within the framework of an ongoing research program funded by Forte on how cognitive and spatial relationships between emerging and declining jobs create opportunities and constraints for workers and firms in general, and in the context of the Swedish Arctic (Norrbotten and Västerbotten) in particular. The candidate will combine large datasets, covering Swedish job ads recently made available by the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) on the one hand, and Statistics Sweden’s longitudinal register data on individuals and firms on the other. As a PhD-student you will be part of an existing research group with both senior and junior researchers who jointly work on this topic with research groups at Göteborg University and Lund University. The PhD student is expected to have documented skills in quantitative analyses and to work with large public data as well as longitudinal micro-data within the scope of this program.
