PhD position summary/title: Fully Funded PhD and MD-PhD positions
The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is an associated Institute of the University of Basel.
The IOB PhD and MD-PhD Program on Translational Visual Neurosciences offers a unique opportunity to make breakthrough discoveries in the function or dysfunction of the eye and the visual brain, as well as to develop radically new therapies for eye diseases. These therapies are urgently needed, since the prevalence of visual diseases is rising globally, and effective therapies are lacking for most of them.
As part of this program, IOB offers PhD and MD-PhD fellowships to outstanding candidates from diverse fields such as Biology, Medicine, Physics, Computer Sciences and Engineering who wish to pursue their research in any of our research groups (molecular and clinical re-search centre).
In addition to participating in world-leading vision research, IOB also offers an exciting program of lectures on vision, eye diseases and therapy, practical training in state of the art physiologi-cal, molecular and translational technologies, clinical time involving patient visits, practical training in scientific writing and in scientific presentations, in-depth advice on academic, indus-trial and clinical career pathways, as well as opportunities to participate in international sum-mer courses and conferences.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student 100% in the field of exercise physiology
A doctoral position is to be filled at the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health (DSBG) of the University of Basel in the research group for movement and training science from April 1, 2025 or by agreement. The post holder will be involved in the implementation of the frAGILE study funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This study examines the effects of an immobilization phase followed by re-training depending on age and gender. Modern measurement methods are used to investigate the underlying mechanisms that explain possible differences between age groups and genders.
The position serves to promote young scientists. The applicant is expected to pursue a PhD degree at the University of Basel.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on artificial photosynthesis at sub-zero temperatures within cryo-protective lipidic mesophase nanoconfinement (P2406) 100%
Photosynthesis is a critical process that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and transforms it into organic matter, which forms the primary source of the Earth’s biomass and energy storage. However, in polar regions and during winters, the natural photosynthetic activity ceases due to the low temperature. This project aims to develop an unfrozen artificial photosynthetic platform using nanoconfinement to keep water liquid and enable CO2 fixation at sub-zero temperatures. Lipidic mesophases have proven effective for other enzymatic reactions down to -20 °C. Utilizing this platform, we will incorporate thylakoid membranes from pea plants, containing all necessary enzymes for photosynthesis. The efficiency of this nano-platform at low temperatures will be tested by measuring the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). Combination of techniques such as small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) will be employed to analyse nanoscale self-assembly and the impact of molecular dynamics on photosynthetic efficiency at low temperatures.
