PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Multiscale Modeling of Supramolecular Materials.
Supramolecular and hybrid nanomaterials are attracting much interest in view of their potential applications in various branches of engineering. New experimental techniques are offering unprecedented opportunities in the design of new materials at the molecular scale, vastly outperforming materials currently in use. Yet, the exploration of the huge design space is a severe bottleneck, and computational models are needed to provide quantitative, predictive guidelines for material design. Multiscale modeling is required in order to bridge the spatiotemporal gap between computer simulations and engineering applications and to capture emergent behaviour at several scales.
Deadline of PhD Position: 31 August 2021

PhD position summary/title: PhD position GELINA facility
We are looking for a PhD candidate who will perform measurements of (n,xn) cross sections using GAINS spectrometer at the GELINA facility. These cross sections are required for improvement of the current nuclear databases. In the nuclear-energy applications these databases are used to model range of processes from a critical zone of the reactor to a shielding of the core and radioactive waste. Improvement of the modelling precision might potentially reduce construction costs of a nuclear reactor, since less conservative estimation of building material would be required.
Deadline of PhD Position: 15 July 2021
(03) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Host-microbiome Associations in Birds
The student will conduct comparative and experimental research in the field and in captivity on the preen gland microbiome of birds, in close collaboration with a postdoc, Dr Veronika Gvozdikova Javurkova, within the same project. Supervision is by Prof. B. Irene Tieleman, Prof. Joana Falcao Salles and Dr Maurine W. Dietz (University of Groningen).
Deadline of PhD Position: 10 June 2021

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on the project ‘How Gullible Are We?’
In this project we aim to address what is arguably one of the most pressing issues of our time: when and why we are more or less gullible (easily duped, cheated or persuaded) in the face of false or deceitful claims.
We will deal with questions such as: how easily do we fall prey to deceptive advertising, fake news, and misinformation on alleged hypes, (geo)political issues, or health threats? Under which conditions will this gullibility persist and when will it convert into vigilance and scepticism?
Deadline of PhD Position: 7 June 2021
(05) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering
This project aims to gather evidence and provide answers to questions, such as What makes a good software team? How software changes? How do human and social factors shape software and its development? How does software shape software teams and their experiences?
Deadline of PhD Position: 6 June 2021
(06) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position Child and Family Welfare
Candidates that have an interdisciplinary background and are willing and able to work across boundaries and disciplines (in particular natural and complexity sciences) are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong analytical and quantitative skills as well as clinical interest and experience are an absolute pre.
Deadline of PhD Position: 4 June 2021
(07) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Robotic Manipulation
This PhD project focuses on learning dual-arm manipulation skills for service robots to assist humans in various household/industrial tasks. For example, consider a dish-washing task, where one arm is used to position the dish and the other arm cleans the dish, or dynamically lifting large heavy objects, or even manipulation of a tray containing several objects.
Deadline of PhD Position: 1 June 2021
(08) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology
The 3 PhD candidates with backgrounds in biophysics or biochemistry will conduct curiosity-driven biomolecular research to investigate the working mechanism of an ABC transporter involved in cell volume regulation, using high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy, single-molecule fluorescence and biochemical assays, and develop methods to study protein networks in synthetic membrane systems. The research will be performed in the groups of Cristina Paulino and Bert Poolman of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in enzyme engineering and biocatalysis
PhD project (ESR13) on exploiting enzyme promiscuity to develop novel aldolases
ESR13 investigates 4-oxalocrotonate tautomerase (4-OT) promoted aldol addition of acetaldehyde to a variety of benzaldehydes looking for efficiency, stereochemistry and product selectivity. The researcher will generate mutability landscapes for this enzyme to develop tailor-made aldolases with enhanced activity and selectivity and will harness the best performing enzymes in (chemo)enzymatic cascades to prepare diols and aminoalcohols. In addition, redesigned natural aldolases will also be tested as potential catalysts for these and related reactions.
Deadline of PhD Position: 31 May 2021
