(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PDRA Post Doctoral Research Associate

The PDRA will work on the Medical Research Council (MRC) funded project is “Developing Novel Technology for Data Driven Clinical Decision Making” MR/Y007816/1. The project aims to combine ultra-precision laser ablation with metabolic profiling via mass spectrometry providing pathological information to the surgeon to stratify patients and inform on more effective, targeted treatments that prevent recurrence. This is a collaboration with Imperial College London and The University of Leeds.Glioblastoma (GBM) brain tumours are deadly and incurable and therefore novel and more effective treatments are urgently needed. The extent to which a GBM tumour can be removed drastically impacts patient survival, but surgeons must be extremely careful not to damage normal brain tissue as this can severely affect quality of life. Unfortunately, some cancer cells remain and are treated with radiochemotherapy but this subsequent treatment only delays tumour regrowth, and patient demise, by an average of 3 months. This projects long term goals is to develop technology to simultaneously tackle two aspects that currently hinder effective GBM treatment by: 1) developing a new ultra-short pulsed laser-tissue interaction regime that can precisely remove cancer cells, with reduced thermal impact on normal brain cells whilst simultaneously optimising the “ejection plume” from the ablation site for, 2) use with in situ metabolic profiling equipment (Mass Spectrometry) that can feedback pathological information (contained in the ejection plume during ablation) to the surgeon and be used to stratify patients and inform on more effective, targeted treatments that prevent recurrence.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate/Research Fellow – Data Scientist for Transport Decarbonisation

The Research Associate/Fellow post offer the successful candidates an outstanding opportunity to develop their research career, by engaging with a close-knit international community of researchers on a range of well-funded research projects. The successful candidates will report directly to the Principal Investigator Prof Phil Greening and be responsible for conducting data science tasks related to a range of data sources provided for the research portfolio (data cleaning, data analysis, data validation across a range of projects). They will be important members of the logistics modelling team and will be expected to liaise closely with other team members to ensure that data related tasks can be integrated into the broader logistics research carried out by the centre.  The team utilises data sourced from industrial partners and government as the basis for advanced logistics modelling. As the programme expands, this is becoming an increasingly important role in the research team.

About Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Official Website

Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first mechanics’ institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.

Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge.

Heriot-Watt was established as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821. Having been inspired by Anderson’s College in Glasgow, Horner established the School to provide practical knowledge of science and technology to Edinburgh’s working men. The institution was initially of modest size, giving lectures two nights a week in rented rooms and boasting a small library of around 500 technical works. It was also oversubscribed, with admissions soon closing despite the cost of 15 shillings for a year’s access to lectures and the library.

The School was managed by a board of eighteen directors and primarily funded by sponsors from the middle and upper classes including Robert Stevenson and Walter Scott. It first became associated with the inventor and engineer James Watt in 1824, as a means of raising funds to secure permanent accommodation. Justifying the association, School Director Lord Cockburn said:
