PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student – Mechanisms of intercellular mitochondrial transfer in alzheimer’s disease

The doctoral student will be working in the research group led by Professor Maria Ankarcrona, belonging to the Division of Neurogeriatrics at the Department of NVS. Our group is based in the new research building BioClinicum in Solna. BioClinicum is connected to the hospital and the Karolinska Institutet’s new research house BioMedicum. The Ankarcrona Lab currently consists of five people with different academic levels and backgrounds, educationally as well as culturally. The focus of the research group is the understanding of mitochondrial dysfunction mechanisms leading to synaptic alterations and neurodegeneration, and the search for mitotherapeutics with potential to reach clinical studies. The current projects on the lab are focus on i) the study of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites and how these structures affect synaptic function and inflammasome activation; and ii) the transfer of mitochondria between neuronal cells. Along the past years Ankarcrona group has done important discoveries in the field of mitochondria and Alzheimer´s disease such as the identification of the pathways by which amyloid-β internalize in mitochondria and the discovery of new modulators of mitochondria-ER contact sites (Hansson Petersen et al. 2008 PNAS, Hedskog et al. 2013 PNAS, Filadi et al. 2018 Current Biol.; Naia et al. 2021 BMC Biol.)

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral studies in Central Nervous System Regeneration

Our lab investigates fibrotic scar formation and its impact on axonal regeneration and functional recovery following lesions to the central nervous system (CNS). We discovered a new population of perivascular cells, called type A pericytes, as the source of fibrotic scar tissue (Göritz et al., Science, 2011) and identified pericyte-derived scar formation as a therapeutic target to achieve axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (Dias et al., Cell, 2018). Recently, we showed that fibrotic scarring by perivascular cells is a conserved mechanism in the adult mammalian CNS (Dias et al., Nature Com., 2021).

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in computational and structural biology of cancer mutations in novel targets

The doctoral project will focus on the computational study of proteins such as transporters or enzymes, not considered oncogenic, but that carry clusters of cancer mutations. She/he will learn and apply computational techniques to study in-depth a few such protein families and identify potentially functional mutations to be tested in the wet-lab in-house or through collaborations. The student is expected to investigate independently the molecular mechanisms of mutations and their potential impact on the cellHe/She is expected to participate writing manuscripts for international scientific journals, as well as contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate educational and dissemination activities.

PhD position summary/title: Doktorandplats inom barncancerforskning

PhD position summary/title: Doktorandplats inom Human Protein Atlas (HPA) hjärnprofilerings-grupp

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
