PhD position summary/title: PhD in Conservation genomics of endangered red pandas

The section Ecology & Evolution, part of the Amsterdam Institute for Life and Environment (A-LIFE) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam invites applications for an ambitious PhD position that will combine innovative bioinformatics and genomic tools to study captive and wild red panda genomes for conservation. Understanding the population structure of (sub)species is crucial for both wildlife conservation and effective population management of back-up populations in zoos, given the potential harm hybridization poses to the reintroduction potential of zoo animals. The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is an endangered mammal with only 2,500 to 10,000 individuals in the wild. Debate is ongoing whether the species should be split into two distinct species: Ailurus fulgens fulgens and Ailurus fulgens styani. This project aims to assess the genetic health of the worldwide zoo population and determine the taxonomic origin of its founders. Additionally, the candidate will explore genomic compatibility between populations to predict the potential effect of hybridization. In collaboration with the international studbook keeper of the red panda zoo population, based at Rotterdam zoo, we will use long- and short read whole genome sequence data from key individuals from the zoo population with an additional reference dataset of re-sequenced wild individuals. This project will develop a genomics-informed framework for conservation and reintroduction of red pandas, and could potentially set a new standard for the field of conservation genomics.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD: Individual behaviour under climate change risks

The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) has a new position for a PhD student in the field of behavioural economics. You will become part of a new interdisciplinary research programme (INSUREADAPT) funded by the European Research Council (ERC). This project aims to improve preparedness of households and businesses for multi-hazard climate change risks in the EU, such as floods and storms.         

The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Wouter Botzen, Dr Peter Robinson, and Dr Sanchayan Banerjee. You will also collaborate with other researchers who will be recruited for this project. Your main tasks are to:

  1. design and apply theories from the fields of behavioural science and psychology that explain why some people take effective measures to prepare for the various risks posed by climate change, whereas many others do not.
  2. implement surveys among households and businesses that empirically test these behavioural theories in various EU countries with varying climate risks.
  3. draw lessons for public sector policy makers and insurance companies that aim to stimulate individuals to better prepare for natural hazards posed by climate change, such as building-scale measures that limit damage to properties.

An important part of the ERC project INSUREADAPT is the integration of the insights from this PhD project in an agent-based model of climate change risks and human adaptation processes in collaboration with the project team. An inter- or multidisciplinary background and good communication skills are therefore important assets.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on learning with algorithmic technologies in medical diagnosis

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD-position on learning with algorithmic technologies, as part of the NWO-funded project “Learning in artificial intelligence across and beyond occupational communities (LIAISON): Towards effective deployment of novel algorithmic technologies in medical diagnosis”.

Sophisticated algorithms, machine learning, deep learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable innovative ways of working and learning. A concrete and promising example of this is the use of AI in the domain of radiology. By using AI for diagnosing, radiologists can reduce their day-to-day workload, freeing up time to spend on medically challenging cases. This in turn can lead to more rigorous diagnostic accuracy, increased senses of autonomy in managing one’s daily work.

However, the current use of algorithmic technologies for making such improvements in medical practice has been limited, short-sighted, fragmented, and unsystematic. While organizations and institutions are investing significantly in algorithmic technologies, this does not yet create sustainable, significant, viable values for patients, society, and the healthcare ecosystem.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position “Differences in trainability of Wellbeing”

In light of major demographic trends, building and maintaining health and wellbeing amongst citizens is one of the most important societal challenges countries face. People who feel well, function better, are less susceptible to mental illness, and thus are better able to retain competitive advantage and expand human capital. People who feel well also facilitate social capital by enjoying stronger and more-lasting relationships.

Knowledge on the malleability of wellbeing is essential to facilitate and build wellbeing. While converging evidence reports significant positive effects of wellbeing training, the effects have so far only been studied in single omics designs.

In this project, we, as a team, will go beyond the state of the art by setting up a (gamified) wellbeing training in a multi-omics informative sample, including (epi) genetic, metabolome, and environmental (exposome) data. We will extend traditional randomized control approaches by making optimal use of the unique characteristics of a twin sample, by using identical twins as (nearly) perfect matched controls. PhD position summary/title: Phd: Sex and gender differences in the working mechanisms of addiction

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the Netherlands. While the prevalence of AUD is 2-3 times higher in men than in women, this gap is quickly closing. Moreover, the prevalence of AUD is suggested to be 3 times higher among gender minorities compared to cisgender individuals. Unfortunately, sex and gender differences in the development and treatment of AUD have been scarcely investigated. Therefore, the main aim of the current PhD project will be to investigate sex and gender differences in stress-related alcohol use in both clinical and non-clinical populations based on different datasets. In these datasets, we have data on subjective (craving) and physiological (heart rate variability, cortisol) alcohol cue and stress reactivity, sex hormone levels and as well as daily variations in stress, craving and alcohol use as measured over 28 days (SEGA 2.0 study)  or 4 months (SEGA study).

The PhD on this project will focus primarily on setting up and performing statistical analyses of these complex longitudinal and physiological data, including dynamic structural equation modelling. In these analyses, you will not only focus on sex-based biological differences (including variations in sex hormone levels) but also sociocultural gender-related differences (including variations in gender expression). Results will be published in scientific articles, with the overall aim to gain insight into the sex- and gender differences in the working mechanisms underlying alcohol use disorder.

PhD position summary/title: PhD: Adoption of Functional Agrobiodiversity and Modelling Ecosystem Services

You will be part of a multidisciplinary project (FABforward) on various aspects of functional agrobiodiversity (FAB), funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). You will mainly work on economics and ecosystem services of FAB adoption by farmers. The position involves working across multiple research institutes. At the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you will design and implement a survey and choice experiment aimed at assessing FAB adoption by Dutch farmers. The survey findings will provide input to your work on natural capital models for FAB-related ecosystem services, and on applying these models in a spatially explicit way; this work will be mainly carried out at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR). You will be supervised by Dr Mark Koetse and Prof. Pieter van Beukering from IVM, supported by RIVM and WENR staff.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position Navigating the Leadership–Accountability Dilemma

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD-position on studying how accountability and technical expertise shape leaders’ willingness to take risky decisions. Leadership includes making decisions under uncertainty. Oftentimes, such decisions entail a “safe” option (e.g., one in line with established processes) and a riskier but potentially more beneficial option. Experiencing a high “felt” accountability, the expectation that one will be held accountable for one’s decisions, might propel leaders towards taking the safe option. The PhD candidate would analyse whether having expert knowledge in the core business of the organisation moderates the relationship, such that expert leaders are more willing to choose the risky, less-travelled path, weakening the relationship between felt accountability and playing it safe.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in both experiment and survey-based research to study how leaders navigate the apparent dilemma between their perceived accountability and the benefits of unconventional, hence risky, decisions. This can include experimental research on the link between felt accountability and taking safe or risky choices, as well as survey and/or experimental research on how technical expertise relates to whether accountability is perceived as a threat or opportunity. As part of the project,you will work directly with Agnes BäkerLeander de Schutter and Rafael Wilms (Associate and Assistant Professors at VU Amsterdam) and Amanda Goodall (Professor of Leadership at Bayes Business School, London), all experts in the field of leadership.

Despite decades of dedicated collaborative efforts, we are still missing key elements to develop the perfect electronic nose. A major obstacle is our limited understanding of how the sense of smell works, and how odorant sensors should be designed for smell detection. The project ODORWISEjoins advanced computer simulation techniques together with available results from experiments to study how the proteins in our noses can detect and distinguish different chemicals. The outcome will aid the design of new biomimetic sensor units for detecting smells, which will be a significant advancement for early disease diagnosis and surveillance in non-invasive sustainable healthcare.
